When it was ratified, it was the supreme law of the land. Now, it's just something for the majority of our elected officials to wipe their feet on as they take away more and more of our rights. The reason i respect Dr. Paul more than any other politician, past, present, or future is because he stands up for what this country was founded on. Personal choice.
To Anne: Granted, abortion is a personal choice, but, if life begins at conception, and we must assume this, because we can't fully know if consciousness begins at the onset of the second trimester we have an obligation to protect the right of that unborn child. Either way, the responsibility lies with couple that chose to have unprotected sex. In the cases of rape, there is a morning after pill. In the case of incest, there are orphanages. In the case of immaculate conception, there are nuthouses for those of you that believe in that kind of hooey.
As for the internet (why does every political discussion revert back to abortion?) it was born free. it's the same concept that government can not restrict my speech. The internet is a forum for information exchange, whether it is pornography, religion, politics, those of you that surf the internet should be aware that you might run into bestiality, but you have a choice to close the browser window. The same is true if you attend the RNC.
I am so weary and worn down from the government telling me what is best for me. You do not know enough about me or my life to make that kind of determination. Your ways of protecting me are opressing me. Let me be just as free as me ancestors were after we kicked the Redcoats out of out country.

It really all comes down to our “government” following, literally, the word of the Constitution. "Why why destroy that which does not belong to us when we have the ability to stop it in the first place?"
Tell me, what's been done to stop, oh rape? or child abuse?
Orphanages? Surely you jest, we are in the US. Teenage mothers and their boyfriends beat, abuse and yes, kill their unwanted babies perhaps because they dont have family and community support. What is being done for the young woman you convince to not have that abortion to protect that precious life after birth? How are they both being helped?
Yeah! I actually agree with you - we have the ability to stop the madness but, hey - we are not doing it...
I get that it's hard for you to understand this but I am not pro-abortion, what I am is pro-choice. Women and children have to stop being made to pay the price for society's mistakes. What you and Sean put out above is that you think women should live with the consequence of being a victim of a viscious crime for life. Do some make people stupid decisions - unfortunately yes, but it's not always the case. Just watch the news.To outlaw a medical procedure based on your morals contradicts Mr. Paul's position of personal freedom for all Americans, and that includes women!

I’ll use your own words. "
“The most basic principle to being a free American is the notion that we as individuals are responsible for our own lives and decisions. … Freedom to make bad decisions is inherent in the freedom to make good ones. If we are only free to make good decisions, we are not really free.”This is great - I admire your position but I struggle with the conflict I feel when I read this knowing that you are strongly against choice. It truly doesn’t make sense to me. How can you believe this yet not believe in permitting women the right to self-determination?
"
Your deduction from Ron Paul's words is fundamentaly wrong, read through the words you quoted, and you will see three word. "...our own lives and decisions..." Any way you look at it, consciousness is a defining characteristic of humanity, and you can't tell me honestly, when you see a baby that you don't see it's mind working and learning. Who are you to say consciousness magical manifests after being born? Who are you to decide if a person lives or dies?
That is why orphanages existed. try this on for size, Don't practice unsafe sex, educate your kids, and put all repeat sex offenders on an island where they can't hurt anybody but themselves but can still contribute too the economy through employing them in manufacturing. So in conclusion, I leave you with a question; Why why destroy that which does not belong to us when we have the ability to stop it in the first place?

Anne, i must say that your argument has two fatal flaw, the basis of your whole arguments. What "you consider" and "I consider" to be facts are interpretations of our conscience. Ron Paul implies that one should not impose one's morals on another. In this situation you both are, by saying (because of the marvels of medical technology perhaps?) that a fetus is a person. Besides that issue - how about the raped teenager? or the one raped by her father? How could you impose 'your consideration' on that poor child? Just because a woman (or girl) is pregnant does not mean she made a mistake. And! Consider this - unfortunately 8 and 10 years olds are getting their periods now and - God forbid, precious 8 and 10 year olds are being raped. What are we to do for pregnant little girls when you outlaw abortion?

Interesting Sean, I have read that carefully and I believe by his own stated principle – <a

Please read again Dr. Paul's statements at the very beginning of his essay:"The most basic principle to being a free American is the notion that we as individuals are responsible for our own lives and decisions. We do not have the right to rob our neighbors to make up for our mistakes, neither does our neighbor have any right to tell us how to live, so long as we aren’t infringing on their rights."I would venture to guess that Dr. Paul considers an unborn human being to be a person (as I do myself). If a woman makes a mistake (i.e. becomes pregnant without meaning to do so) it does not give her the right to harm her child. She has to pay for her own mistakes.

Anne,<br

It is good to hear someone talking the Internet and personal freedoms. There is a rising tide of people who are looking not to the government to protect them from objectionable content online, but are instead seeking self-censorship with great resolve. Have you ever heard of accountability software? Accountability software is specifically for adults who want to guard where they go online without any blocking or filtering. If you want more info about it check out my post “Is Filtering All There Is?” - http://www.covenanteyes.com/blog/2008/06/12/is-filtering-all-there-is-introducing-accountability-software/

Thanks for your thoughts, Ron.
