Ron Paul Asks Congress: “What If…?”

Channel: C-SPAN
Date: 02/13/2009

Ron Paul: “Madam Speaker, I have a few questions for my colleagues.

What if our foreign policy of the past century is deeply flawed and has not served our national security interest?

What if we wake up one day and realize that the terrorist threat is the predictable consequence of our meddling in the affairs of others, and has nothing to do with us being free and prosperous?

What if propping up repressive regimes in the Middle East endangers both the United States and Israel?

What if occupying countries like Iraq and Afghanistan and bombing Pakistan is directly related to the hatred directed toward us?

What if someday it dawns on us that losing over 5,000 American military personnel in the Middle East since 9/11 is not a fair tradeoff with the loss of nearly 3,000 American citizens no matter how many Iraqi, Pakistanian, Afghan people are killed or displaced?

What if we finally decide that torture, even if called “enhanced interrogation technique”, is self-destructive and produces no useful information and that contracting it out to a third world nation is just as evil?

What if it is finally realized that war and military spending is always destructive to the economy?

What if all war-time spending is paid for through the deceitful and evil process of inflating and borrowing?

What if we finally see that war-time conditions always undermine personal liberty?

What if Conservatives who preach small government wake up and realize that our interventionist foreign policy provides the greatest incentive to expand the government?

What if Conservatives understood once again that their only logical position is to reject military intervention and managing an empire throughout the world?

What if the American people woke up and understood that the official reasons for going to war are almost always based on lies and promoted by war propaganda in order to serve special interests?

What if we as a nation came to realize that the quest for empire eventually destroys all great nations?

What if Obama has no intention of leaving Iraq?

What if a military draft is being planned for for the wars that would spread if our foreign policy is not changed?

What if the American people learned the truth, that our foreign policy has nothing to do with national security, that it never changes from one administration to the next?

What if war in preparation for war is a racket serving the special interests?

What if President Obama is completely wrong about Afghanistan and it turns out worse than Iraq and Vietnam put together?

What if Christianity actually teaches peace and not preventive wars of aggression?

What if diplomacy is found to be superior to bombs and bribes in protecting America?

What happens if my concerns are completely unfounded?

But what happens if my concerns are justified and ignored?

Nothing good.

And I yield back the balance of my time.”

    Dear Mr.Johnson,
We have much in common in our beliefs about freedom. It is not just an American thing…it is a universal right for all men, women and children to be able to protect and defend themselves. Canadian citizens have also lost their right to bear arms. Now their citizens are killed with baseball bats, knifes, tire irons and so on. I agree, the criminal is not going to abide by the law anyway. On March 27th a film about 911 is coming out, called ‘Corrution to the Core’. It will prove beyond any doubt who the main players where. They are American businessmen along with some elite politicians. I only hope Americans have enough wisdom & courage to bring these people to justice. I feel we are heading towards civil unrest in this country. Anarchy. Please spread the word about this movie because this needs to become a worldwide movement. I they can pull this off here they will do it anywhere and no one is safe. Peace & Goodwill

  • Ross

Gary,I have some helpful advice.Keep your weapons as you cannot trust those who proport to represent you in Govt.Obama like our last leader is going to try and disarm your population. This is the only thing at the moment keeping the parisites in check. Our population has been effectively disarmed and only the criminals/police have weapons.

Just seeing Obama perform recently,I would no more trust him than the Bush dynasty. This is all about the power of the Federal Res and the Global Corporates. They are acting in concert to achieve their mutual goals and they do not want the competition of the free market. The socialists and the facists have a lot in common.

The education of the internet is the way to go.Our oppressors will try to use our ignorance to divide and conquer.Keep up the fight for individual freedom!

  • Gary

    Greetings Mr. Johnson,
I hope all will go well for everyone in your country. Many people around the world paint a vile picture of Americans, and rightly so in many ways. I for one do not advocate death and destruction upon innocent people. Until the people of this country wake up and realize we have been lied to, deceived and manipulated by our government officials I fear we will continue to bear the cross. We must demand accountablitiy on all levels of government. So many of our young men are dying needlessly in the war on terror. Many countries know the truth about 911 yet we refuse to believe our own government would have committed this dastardly act upon it’s own people. Oklahoma city bombing, Ruby Ridge, Waco Texas massacure…when does it end and when do we fight back? How do we fight back against these vile deeds? If the truth be known we would have had anarchy long ago. Yet to speak in these terms some here would call you insane and a kook, instead of researching the evidence in each of these cases and using reason as a basis to uncover the truth, we swallow the kool-aid served on the 6 o’clock news without question. Each of these crimes served it’s purpose. We have lost more of our rights each time these acts are perpetuated against us. I fear we will become a fascist state before we know what hit us. Until Americans quit being complacent we are doomed for failure. Apathy is just as much to blame here. Maybe once reality sets in will we wake up!

  • Ross Johnson

Yes,Gary we have have similar problems with corruption here in Australia, particularly at State Govt levels. It is only when a family or society collapses totally,do we realise the need for honesty and cohesion.

Many good things can come from hardship,if people have the wisdom to be less selfish and work on concert with positive goals.I don’t think that Obama is the man for your moment. He enunciates all the platitudes, yet does not tackle the reality that Ron Paul paints.

  • Great questions Dr. Paul.

Now can his colleagues please answer the questions!

  • What a great speech. Truth to power RON PAUL!

  • Gary

One thing I would like to comment on is I appreciate that no one here is slandering or name calling other posters. We are all here to learn as that is what life is for. I only offer my opinion as I think it out in my head. I do try to offer stuff of substance and various websites that can help anyone gather knowledge to be able to decipher the web of deceit which is thrown at us daily. One only need go to Jon Roland did a fabulous job putting this site together and it has helped me immensly in my search for knowledge. One book well worth reading is titled ‘The Law’ by Frederic Bastiat. It was written in 1850 and what he wrote then still holds true ’til this day. You will have a better understanding of the stimulus bill and every other socialist program being implemented in this country today!

America was founded by our four fathers the love they have for God their morals they fought strong to give people freedoms that sad part it is someday will come to the end. Because the people in the Government are so selfish and they would do anything to destroy this country for money. They would say and do anything to be elected for president and hide behind a religion and faith and lie to the American people like this joker has done and many more other like him who have lie to the people. STOP lying to your self government (the people in the government have sold their souls to the evil of the world I say this because they would be honest instead they lie steal and murder all because of money look what’s behind the evil act the evil banking system ) So I say this to all of you.
You are not giving people the life their father and mother once had to live a life with out the government butting their nose into raising their children and their was a period of time this country teach the bible in the school’s The Ten Commandments Display in the court house, The pledge elegies united states America was stated in the public schools. The American money was backed by gold not paper (thanks to the evil banking system and the government)
I am sicken by this action some day you all will have to answered to God and God said this to love him you must keep his ten commandments. Killing insist baby’s ( I am sorry people we are not here to kill each other off we are here to make decisions and to help one another and to love our neighbor as like our self. Government has the people fooled by their dirty games remember Y2k that was a joke now it is global worming satin is doing a dammed good job using evil science and the government to do his job to destroy this country. They will say and do anything to destroy this country and they used the rich to hide behind and the news media what makes me sad once a pond time these people used to be like the middle class and poor the only difference is they end up later in life worker for the government. Their used to be no gun control everyone had the right to own and have a gun not anymore.

Thank you government for destroying this country !!!and being selfish !!!!
Government you all forget People should not be the government property we are not robots and Animals should not be track by micro chip. God did not make people to be micro chip or made animals to be micro chip. So stop this evil and selfish act.

    • Gary

Our government is us. We the people! We just need to take it back. That is the beauty of what Ron Paul speaks about, getting invovled. It starts here, now! Start with your local government, support Ron Paul like minded people, then get invovled on the state level, then the federal level. Join chat groups that support your train of thought, your beliefs. If you have children teach them well, bring them along for the ride. Teach them about their Republic, because the federally funded public school system won’t. I wholeheartly agree with everthing you said. I feel it too. So many days of feeling helpless. But knowledge is the key. Once you attain it you can not be dupped any longer. The web of deceit comes into focus and the truth will prevail. That truth is in your heart. It is in your desire to have a better community, a better world to live in. For you, your family, your friends. We all need to come together at some point and focus our energy on taking back our nation. It starts with holding our elected officials accountable. And if they do not represent us we need to do everything possible to kick them out. Once that starts happening the rest will tow the line. I pray for the day we turn back to being a nation of morals, values and integrity! Please check out Education is the key! Turn your frustration into something positive, make a difference. Be accountable to yourself. Teach yourself. It will all come into focus and God will point the way. Remember the Almighty works in mesterious ways. You are here for a reason. Become creative, productive, break from the status quo of business as usually. Refuse to be led astray. Every great person in our history endured great hardship at some point in life. Nothing great comes from being complacent. That is part of the reason we are in the mess we are today. We don’t know who are neighbors are anymore. We don’t have compassion for one another anymore. We have become the me, me, me generation. We have to change our thinking before we can change our government!

  • Great commentary by the brave and honest Ron Paul. I bet all the other members of congress were laughing at him deep down inside because they have no spines and no character and are bought and paid for by the same people who take us to war each time. Thank you Ron Paul and please continue to do what you are doing to wake up as many sheeple as possible.

  • Ross Johnson

Gary talks about people knowing their rights.People here in Aust are pushing for a Bill of Rights.I say we all a counter balance,ie reponsibilities.A Bill of Rights must also include a Bill of Responsibilities. This will mean that each individual must first of all forfill code of conduct that exhibits responsible behaviour.

This will mean that both the legal fraternity as well as Govt can be held accountable for eg excessive or trival litigation, excessive regulation,un-necessary debt etc.The US Federal Res could also be held accountable for their ponzy pyramid schemes.

You cannot have rights without responsibilities.

    • Gary

      Greetings Ross,
That’s the beauty of when Dr. Ron Paul speaks about our rights! He never fails to mention the individual responsiblity attached to those rights. Unfortunately we are surrounded by deceitful people in society who will screw you in a heartbeat. I have waited for someone of his stature to run for President. This past election I finally had a real choice to participate and vote for the best candidate instead of the lesser of two evils. Dr. Paul took the state of Nevada but the Republican party manipulated the state convention. This made me sick to my stomach. I fear this happened in several others states as well. The machine is corrupt to the core. I hope Dr. Paul joins up with the Libertarian or Contitutional Party in 2012. I have noticed more Libertarian & constitutionalist are running for office now and people need to take notice and start to support these candidates. Now that will get the attention of the two party system. And good luck with your bill of rights.

  • Ortsailo

You should go Independent in 2012 Ron, and you’ll have my vote. You speak the truths no one wants to hear but need to. We need to take care of the people that have us chasing our tails in our own back yard and forget about foreign reign.

    • Sean

      whats wrong? please explain

  • Gary

Nothing that has happened to date has happened by mistake. It is done by design. Dr. Ron Paul was the best chance we had to educate the American people but the media won’t allow that to happen, although he did awaken some. I fear we are doomed with obama. His policies reek of socialism to the core. When his socialist policies fail, the press will lay blame elsewhere because he is their ‘Messiah’ and they would never admit to backing the wrong man. It’s an ego thing. This stimulus package is the biggest scam being sold to the American people. 10 years from now people will wonder why they ever voted for obama. Eloquent speeches without any substance. Everything Dr. Paul said about abolishing the federal reserve, the irs, socialist insecurity, and the public school system, plus all the other government run programs is the truth! These agencies are in complete conflict with the Constitution. A good education starts at home. Jon Roland runs the site and has done a fabulous job with it. If more Americans beome educated in the foundation of their Republic and learn about their ‘rights’ we might one day might get it right and start to demand that our elected officials abide by Constitutional law. Dr. Paul please run in 2012!

  • ChrisO

I sincerely wish we had at least a hundred more libertarian minded people in congress right now. Ross is completely correct that we need more like him. Unfortunately, the national media have us in a net right now. Its all about the sound bite. Very few voting Americans, comparatively speaking, will sit through even ten minutes of debate but will listen to entertainment posing as news for hours a week. One key problem that Ron Paul had during the last campaign was trying to educate people as to why the economy, healthcare and other issues are so bad right now and then proposing a solution. The thirty seconds he gets during these three ring circus debates with five or more idiots who all say the same thing doesn’t allow him to fully elaborate on his ideas. Until we can get as much airtime during primetime as the other guys this will continue to be a plague to us as well as America. Also, the Republican party doesn’t seem to be the place for him. As a whole they are far from true conservatism. Basically we desperately need to find a way to get the message machine going like Obama has. Until we get this, we can forget about any real “good” change. I know the message is getting around but is it too little too late?

  • Ross Johnson

There must be other like minded people in the US with ability and a similar philosophy to Ron Paul.I think it is too much burden to put onto one man. This movement needs depth of talent rather than putting all your hopes on one person.

So where are the others in the US who will put country before self interest and step up to the plate?

  • michael

to introduce myself, im dutch, and my government supported the iraq war politically behind the back of a complete nation 70 % over here didnt support the war!!
now an investigation is running and it will cause the end of our lying prime minister.
what worries me the most is :what will happen in the next future??
america has a new president but the world economy is destroyed by personal greed worlwide i dont see any measurements of taking care of what caused this
if you have a basket with rotten apples you dont throw extra apples on it, you remove the bad ones !!!
america same as our own country should leave afghanistan right away
these people are tribe people we dont have the right to mingle into their tribe fights
russia tried it with as result: destroying their own economy ,and
an enormous loss of people on russian aswell as on afghanistan side
iraq showed us its not a war between religions shi-ites kill soenites and opposite for just one single reason : power
    both are muslims
main reason for making decisions for any government world wide should be take care of their own citizens , this principle of democracy is been treated very bad over the last centuries!only
when that has been done its time to think about other countries relationships with them etcetera
how much is the power of war industries worldwide?, and how does the wish of the normal people find a way of bettering situations?
good luck ron paul in keeping your free word being heard!!

  • sue

Thankyou Dr. Paul for always speaking the truth..Please run in 2012

What if trade agreements destroyed our economy?? What if our trade deficits racked up heavy bills and caused the government to borrow and spend money that they didn’t have just to replace the money spent overseas. What if the Federal Reserve and the Government are working hard day in and day out just to maintain some sort of stable money supply. What if this is completly out of anyones hands, so we have to lie to the public and stimulate the economy just so there wouldn’t be anarchy that destroys our republic? What kind of mess did we get ourselves into, and how could we possibly get out of it?

    • Sean
    • Nate

Dude, again you confuse cause and effect. It’s not the trade deficits that cause the borrowing and spending of money overseas. It’s the borrowing and spending of money overseas that cause the trade deficits. You have it backwards…again.

“What if…we have to lie to the public and stimulate the economy just so there wouldn’t be anarchy that destroys our republic?” This is nonsense. It’s the lies and the “stimulus” packages that will cause the civil unrest and the complete destruction of the republic.

I don’t get it. The links you posted support the anti-inflation crowd. Yet you think inflation (remember, inflation is an expansion of the supply of money/credit) isn’t anything to be concerned about. You gotta stop arguing with yourself.

      • Sean

WHy would we borrow money? What is it like 3 billion a day or something? Because we spend like half a billion a day on the war, 1.3 billion a day on oil and 1.3 billion a day on foreign goods. Thats why we borrow money, to pay for our american spending habbit.. It is the people who oppose the stimulus who is causing civil unrest with the general public. There is really no way to fix the situation, but they are going to help improve it.. And those weren’t an anti-inflation adds, they were anti trade deficit adds. They were warning us of our consumption addictions.

        • Sean

This is why China has been growing so fast.. We built high standards when our country was so productive. Now we reached too high of standards and we dont expect to produce more than we consume. Now china has racked up such a large surplus from america so their standards of living is becoming higher and they are building their country the fastest the world has ever seen. The glory wealthy days of America is over because we gave away all our money.. Just like if i had a hundred dollars and i spent it all. I would not have that hundred dollars anymore. Whoever has that money now is a hundred dollars richer and can do whatever they want with it, like build up a country.. In order for me to get more money i would have to do one of two things. 1. i have to produce goods, or go to a job. 2. i would have to borrow more money. When fractional reserve banking does not cover the funds, the government has to borrow money or sell debt.

          • Sean

Why do you think the government started borrowing more and more money over the past couple decades, its because our deficit has been growing larger and larger. It’s a balance of payments.

          • Nate

Good post. Until you get to #2 and completely contradict yourself. You rightly state that borrowing and consuming has left the US in very bad shape (“the glory wealthy days of America are over”) yet you think that we can turn it around through central banking, fractional reserve banking, more borrowing, and more inflation. You have to get that nonsense out of your thought processes. It’s like a drunkard thinking he can sober up by taking 15 more shots of vodka.

        • Nate

So you admit our borrowing and consuming is a huge problem. Yet you support the stimulus package with is…MORE borrowing and consuming. Again, this makes no sense. Of course you’ll probably counter with the we’re going to borrow to create “green jobs” and they’ll be productive, and we’ll wean ourselves off foreign oil. Before you do so, let me just say that I hope alternative fuel technologies hold promise. But the most efficient way of discovering the individuals/companies/tecnologies needed to replace current fuels is most certainly not governments (especially those suffering harrowing deficits). The unhampered free market is the best method of discovery.

You also fail to see that expanding the supply of money/credit (inflation) is the main reason we are able to run trade deficits and wage unnecessary wars. You can’t be anti-trade deficit/anti-war without being anti-inflation.

          • Sean

i’m totally against creating and spending money overseas. We agree on that. i dont think we should make our country dependent on any other country. It makes us weak, venerable, and enslaved. All i’m saying is that the fiat currency is the only way to support this habbit and we need to get off of it, because it can’t support the habbit forever. We can’t depend on china and saudi arabia for a thousand years, or any extended length of time.

          • Sean

We have to start producing and stop consuming if we want to change our monetary policy. not the other way around. If we just switched our monetary policy, it would bankrupt us.

          • Sean

“The United States has posted a trade deficit since the late 1960s (and trade deficits in the late 1960s forced the US off the so-called gold standard in 1971), and it has been rapidly increasing since 1997 [25] (See chart). The US trade deficit hit a record high of 817.3 billion dollars in 2006, up from 767.5 billion dollars in 2005.”- wiki

          • Sean

We started running out of oil in the sixties. Shah of Iran wanted to set up a democracy, but we stepped in and told him that we could make him a dictator for exchange of his oil.. since then we’ve been involved in 3 wars over oil.. Iran-Iraq war, Desert storm, and the Iraq war… We have sided with Iran, Iraq with saddam, and Kuwait.

          • Nate

Seriously dude, your posts so often run counter to each other I don’t know how to respond. Let’s take your monetary policy post. No one is arguing that the government should announce that the US is now back on the gold standard. You’re right to say we can’t do that. It would cause a whole pile of problems. What people are arguing for is commodity/certificate money freely competing in the marketplace through the abolition of legal tender laws. You have a habit of responding to claims no one is making.

Also, economic freedom is the best way to ensure that we are not dependent on other countries.

          • Sean

haha, i’m done. this is going around in circles way too much. YOU OBVIOUSLY DON’T GET IT. We can’t afford any commodity/certificate money, because WE WOULD JUST GIVE IT ALL AWAY! Thats why WE NEED FIAT CURRENCY. THIS IS WHY FIAT REPLACED COMMODITY BACKED MONEY. AND YoU are SO CONFUSED. Economic freedom means that we don’t have to depend on other countries. We are ENSLAVED TO ASIA AND SAUDI ARABIA, NOT BANKERS.

What if America came to realize this?? What should we do about it?
