It’s Not Un-American To Talk About Secession

Ron Paul: This weekend I got a couple of calls from the media asking me questions about Rick Perry, our governor here in Texas and the statements he made about possible secession. Now, he didn’t call for secession, but he was restating a principle that was long held and at least in the original time of our country, and that is that there was a right to secession.

Actually, after the Civil War, nobody believes there is a so-called right to secession, but it is a very legitimate issue to debate because all of the states that came into the Union before the Civil War believed they have a right to secede and New England in the early part of the 19th century actually considered it, and nobody questioned them about whether they had the right to do it or not.

Since the Civil War, it’s been sort of a dead issue, but he brought it up. It stirred the media and believe me, it really stirred some of the liberal media where they started really screaming about what is going on here. “This is un-American”, I heard one individual say, “This is treasonous to even talk about it.”

Well, they don’t know their history very well because if they think about it, it’s an American tradition. It’s very American to talk about secession. That’s how we came into being. Thirteen colonies seceded from the British and established a new country, so secession is very much an American principle.

What about all the strong endorsements we have given over the past decade or two of those republics that seceded from the Soviet system? We were delighted with this. We never said, “Oh no. Secession is treasonous”.

No. Secession is a good principle. Just think of the benefits that would have come over these last 230-some years if the principle of secession had existed. That means the federal government would always have been restrained, not to overburden the states with too much federalism, too many federal rules and regulations.

But since that was all wiped out with the Civil War, the federal government has grown by leaps and bounds and we have suffered the consequences, and we need to reconsider this. It’s not un-American to think about the possibility of secession. This is something that’s voluntary. We came together voluntarily. A free society means you can dissolve it voluntarily. That was the whole issue was about.

Just remember one of the reasons that Wilson drove us in unnecessarily into World War I. He talked about what we have to give, have every country in the world the benefit of self-determination, a good principle. Of course, I don’t think he really believed that. But self-determination is a good principle. It’s a very American principle, so to me it’s a shame that we can’t discuss this.

You know, it’s interesting that so many of us have been taught for so many years, and as long as I can remember from the first grade on up taking the pledge of allegiance that we have a republic that’s “indivisible” and we have been preached that and preached it. So therefore, there is no contest, no question since the Civil War that we have even the thought that this could happen.

But you know what a lot of people don’t talk about and they really don’t even know about is who wrote the pledge to the flag. The pledge to the flag came from, for instance, Bellamy, an avowed Socialist who wanted to put into concrete in the pledge this principle of being indivisible, and he did it, you know, for the celebration ironically 400 years of the celebration of the landing of Christopher Columbus, so it was in 1892.

I mean, the pledge of allegiance has not been here, you know, all our history. So I think it’s worth of discussion. I think people should discuss this because right now, the American people are sick and tired of it all and I think the time will come when people will consider it much more seriously is when the federal government can no longer deliver. That time will come when the dollar collapses.

No matter what they do and how many promises they have and how many bailouts they have, they can’t do it if the money doesn’t work. So then, the independence of the states will come back and it doesn’t mean that you’ll be un-American to even contemplate what might have to be done once the dollar crashes.

    People have tried to make it a Christian nation, for over 200 years they have tried, and they have failed. The people won’t stand for it. What do you think the Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and the other religions would do if this was declared a Christian nation? Plaques that have passages from the bible have been ordered by the courts to be taken down because of separation of church and state. Prayer is illegal in public schools and it goes on and on. Majority does not rule in this case since liberties will be violated. Liberties that we hold very dear to us, liberties that are the foundation of this country.

    I looked up those laws and found nothing in there that said this country was a christian nation. If a law did say that it would be a clear violation of the 1st amendment to the constitution. The 1st amendment is there for a very good reason for in order for all people of this great country to be free they need to be allowed to practice any religion that they believe in, not just christian beliefs. Religion needs to stay out of govt affairs, they do not make good bedfellows.

    I wish that all of you would think about what a secession would do to this country. Yes the states have a right to do it if they want to but, like anything else, it has and will have repercussions to it. Remember, a house divided cannot stand. While Ron Paul is correct saying that it not Un-American to talk about secession there is no point in talking about it since it just will not and cannot happen.

    The states have the power, its given to them in the Constitution but the Feds have been slowly siphoning that power away and this needs to stop but secession is not that way to do it. The south tried it before and it didn’t work and many lives were lost. All it will do is create more problems and we have more then enough of those to go around.

    I personally will not stand for a secession and will fight against one if it comes to that. Why? It makes us all weaker and we need to be stronger now more then ever.

Rather than using the powers our government has to coin it’s own currency, our government has entered into a contract to borrow our own currency from this organization at interest. The burden of this debt being needlessly taken from the rightful earnings of the citizens of this nation. Only Congress shall have the power to coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;

    * The current establishment within our government HAS allowed private interests to have an overpowering influence over our nation’s laws and policies.

    * In addition many of the current officials within our government have been corrupted themselves by these same private interests to the betterment of these private interests and to the detriment of the Common Citizens of our great Nation.

    * The current establishment within our government HAS engaged this nation in wars and hostilities that have been executed in a manner contrary to our Constitution and the intentions of it’s progenitors. Thereby forcing great hardship upon the People of this Nation both personally and financially. And causing great distrust and resentment towards this Nation from the other nations of this world.

    * The current establishment within our government HAS sought the passage of laws that would bring this Nation dangerously close to a State of Tyranny. Mentioned here, but not limited to, the violation of Posse Comitatus. Allowing our government to use it’s own armed forces to police the Citizens of this great Nation.

    * The current establishment within our government HAS sought the enactment of policies that violate the commitments made in previous international treaties. This applies to enemy combatants including the accords of the Geneva Convention and it’s provisions for prisoners taken in conflict. Further straining our nation’s relations with the other nations of this world .

    * The current establishment within our government HAS sought the enactment of policies that violate the commitments made in previous treaties with the native Peoples, who were living in this great land before the establishment of the US government.

    * The current establishment within our government HAS failed utterly to take action to rectify these matters that are critical to the survival of this great Nation and it’s liberty.

    * None of the governing bodies of this Nation have sought to fulfill their sacred duty by Oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of these United States against all enemies foreign or domestic. Despite the blatant and repeated violations of officials within this establishment against the same Country and it’s Constitution they swore to defend.

    Listed here, but far from limited to these, are our grievances with the current establishment. In every stage of these Oppressions we seek to petition for redress in the most humble terms: Our hope is that our petitions will not be answered by further injury. Any government official, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be part of the government of a Free People.

    We therefore as members of this organization do appeal to the Supreme Judge of the World for the rectitude of our intentions, do in the Name and by the Will of the good People of these United States, solemnly publish and Declare that this Country should return to the State of Liberty it was intended to maintain by it’s Founders. We seek to defend this Nation’s glory that a greedy and corrupt few would tarnish in pursuit of personal power at the expense of Liberty. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence, We mutually pledge to each other, regardless of our individual Political affiliations, Religious convictions, and Ethnic Heritage, our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

    When an egg starts to crack apart, a bird comes into life. The stage we are in is this egg cracking. It is Nature taking its course in the life of a group living together under a common purpose that has evolved to its late stages: A Capitalism that once celebrated individual free interprize -or its untrammeled hope and possibility – gradually becoming consumed by the Ogre of the World Bank – who created the Depression and who is creating this Recesion – so to expedite the Federal and governmental take- over of Private Enterprize – also known as Communism. We do applaud the seceders in the Ukraine for disagreeing with the Big C. But we would have to admit that talk of secession here is due to the inevitability, via Fed, of our falling into the same circumstances. Otherwise there need only be focus on how to repair and mend the Free Market. The point Ron Paul makes is consistent – The bad guys have things going just as planned and we are going for the bait and not putting up a fight for the correct reasons RP says we should if we are to come out of this at all. Not enough are heeding his guidelines to get us out of this quicksand. We’re at about chest level right now and the rope offered to think about grabbing is secession. That said, it still hints of ignorance since no matter how you sugar coat it, it’s leading to civil war. It’s a lapse in the analytical brilliance Paul has demonstrated in showing us what we need to do to become a force for sane interactivity with the world. The bottom line is simply that the Ogre has got to be stood up to and completely taken apart.There is no other choice.

    I am a full-blooded supporter of the secession of Texas. I am calling for the secession of the republic of Texas from the Union by writting letters to my state and federal representatives. Why should I continue to support (via my federal tax dollars) an irresponsible nation and an irresponsible federal US government? I am sick and tired and angry of how Washington, DC continues to throw away our freedoms little by little by little. Pretty soon a gentle person like myself will be thrown into a federal prison because I write passionate but stinging letters to my federal and state representatives telling them what I honestly think about their stupid bailouts, economic policies and global treaties.

      I agree with you entirely. I’m from Michigan, where the economy is disasterous. They claim the unemployment rate here is 13%, but that is misleading. That statistic is based on the number of people claiming benefits during the alotted time to claim. If you include the number of people who are on welfare, whose U.I. benefits ran out, are recieving a pension, or just don’t file, the number is probably more like 25-30%. I’ve considered moving to Texas, and as I’ve told my family for a year now, I want to get there before they seceed and close down the borders! Texas has it right, and has been right all along. Do your own damn thing! Tons of respect!

    Strange video. It’s like an answer to a question that isn’t being asked.

    Maybe with one liberal media member, but the average person is not questioning the patriotism or constitutional knowledge of anyone who would mention/suggest secession.

    In addition, any implied comparison between a governor’s statements and the secession by the original 13 colonies is just silly.

    Maybe this fires up the local constituents, but really does nothing to educate or defend anything.

      Read the Constitution. There is no provision for the federal government to stop or even delay the secession of any state from the Union. The matter is simple. The federal government does not have that right. If it did, the right would be explicitly stated. If it was a good idea for them to have that right, we’d have amended the Constitution appropriately by now. That’s how it works.

        Again, I, and a lot of people I talk to, couldn’t give one whit about the legality of that absurd situation, it only confuses and avoids the larger and underlying reasons for which we need to address – big federal government.

    Do you even know history or have read what happened during that time? Mr. Paul you had better go back and read your history and what it actually means to those times. Completely different set of circumstances. Its not even comparable to what is going on now.

    And to talk about a peaceful secession is ludicrous. Have you even heard about the civil war? That’s what happens when a part of the country tries to break away, war.

    We as a country need to work together to get past these difficult times, not break apart at the seams. I suggest that you talk about positive things and not cause more stress for the American people.

    Its time for you to retire Mr. Paul, we need people that will work for the good of the country not people that want to break it apart or support that ridiculous suggestion.

      Under the world court there are two states that can legally remove themselves from the United States, Texas and Vermont. Would it be peaceful, probably not, the government would fight not to allow it. Both states were republics before the came to the Union, and in both cases, neither gave up their rights to remove themselves from the union.

        From the people I talk to, I don’t hear people say ‘i wonder if they have the right, as recognized by the world court, to secede’.

        It’s more, ‘hey, Texas gave us George Bush who exploded the deficit now they are talking about seceding? what hypocrites’.

        I’m just saying, taking it to the legal level is making a highbrow argument where there is no highbrow question. Ron Paul would do a lot better to continue to address those concerns than time spent on defending some quirky right.

        We are all in this together, it is how we got here, and it’s better to understand and work together than try and defend the legalities of absurdities.

          Define a “quirky right”. Why would your definition of “legitimate” right be better than someone elses? The problem with failing to defend some “quirky right” is this: Once we decide which rights we will defend and which we will not (my biggest beef with the ACLU), then it becomes easier to justify defending less of them, and even having more of them taken from us over time.

          If we choose to ignore one person, or group of people’s rights, then when someone comes to take YOUR personal “quirky right” (as defined by them, not you), will there be someone there to stand up for you?

Thats a qoute from your president on the campaign trail. Now what would we need such a force for when we have four military branches and the national guard??? Learn to read between the lines genius.
      Furthermore a secession would be a way of salvaging the constitution and american values as your socalist president is quickly destroying both. Believe me if Texas seceded…what it would become would immediately be more american then the rest of the country. Thats not even considering what it will look like in eight years. Any everything Obama is doing is assuring he will be there for both terms…perhaps longer (remember that little move of taking over the census his first month in office–now why is that such a priority for a new president in the worst econmic crisis in 69 years?)
      Do us both a favor Rob please…support a secession. Think of how great it would be. Mr Obama could get rid of all the evil opposition and he could achieve all his wonderful socialist goals.       First Rob, it’s Dr.Paul, not Mr.Paul, read up on history of who you lecture, especially when you do it on American history. Historiacally we are a republic that came together voluntarily and should be allowed to leave the union voluntarily too. Our founding fathers who knew what an all powerfull government could do and gave us a soverign right to not just secesseed, but even over throw our own government if the people felt that we needed to. The constitution even says it’s our duty to do so as Americans. But don’t take my word for it, go read your history.

    On the day the new Congress convened this year, Sen. Dianne Feinstein introduced legislation to route $25 billion in taxpayer money to a government agency that had just awarded her husband’s real estate firm a lucrative contract to sell foreclosed properties at compensation rates higher than the industry norms.

    Mrs. Feinstein’s intervention on behalf of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was unusual: the California Democrat isn’t a member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs with jurisdiction over FDIC; and the agency is supposed to operate from money it raises from bank-paid insurance payments – not direct federal dollars.

    Documents reviewed by The Washington Times show Mrs. Feinstein first offered Oct. 30 to help the FDIC secure money for its effort to stem the rise of home foreclosures. Her letter was sent just days before the agency determined that CB Richard Ellis Group (CBRE) – the commercial real estate firm that her husband Richard Blum heads as board chairman – had won the competitive bidding for a contract to sell foreclosed properties that FDIC had inherited from failed banks.

    About the same time of the contract award, Mr. Blum’s private investment firm reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission that it and related affiliates had purchased more than 10 million new shares in CBRE. The shares were purchased for the going price of $3.77; CBRE’s stock closed Monday at $5.14.

    Spokesmen for the FDIC, Mrs. Feinstein and Mr. Blum’s firm told The Times that there was no connection between the legislation and the contract signed Nov. 13, and that the couple didn’t even know about CBRE’s business with FDIC until after it was awarded.

    Senate ethics rules state that members must avoid conflicts of interest as well as “even the appearance of a conflict of interest.” Some ethics analysts question whether Mrs. Feinstein ran afoul of the latter provision, creating the appearance that she was rewarding the agency that had just hired her husband’s firm.

    “This clearly gives the appearance of a conflict of interest,” said Kent Cooper, a former federal regulator who specializes in government ethics and disclosures. “To maintain the people’s trust in government, it is incumbent on a legislator to take the extra steps necessary to ensure that when she introduces any legislation that it does not cause people to question her motives or the business activities of her spouse.”

    Mrs. Feinstein and Mr. Blum, a wealthy investment banker, are a power couple in both Washington and California who sat behind President Obama during his inauguration in January. Mrs. Feinstein also is mentioned as a candidate for California governor.

    Along with the gun bill, Montana legislators are considering a resolution that affirms the 10th Amendment principle that the federal government only has those powers that are specifically given to it by the U.S. Constitution.

    “The whole goal is to awaken the people so that we can return to a properly grounded republic,” Rep. Michael More, R-Gallatin Gateway and the Montana resolution’s sponsor, said at a House committee hearing Wednesday.

    As many as fifteen other Legislatures have also been mulling resolutions that buck federal control in states such as New Hampshire, South Carolina, Missouri and Oklahoma.

    “The balance has swung far to the extreme to the empowerment of the federal government, and to the harm of the individual states,” More said.

    Opponents of the state sovereignty bids, however, warn they could give legitimacy to the kind of anti-government ideas that fueled the militia movement in Montana and elsewhere.

    “When you really actually get in and look at it there is a lot of what we feel is very dangerous, very anti-government language that reads very similar to posters for the militia movement in the 1990s,” said Travis McAdam, the interim director of the Montana Human Rights Network, a group formed to oppose racism and extremism. – Helena IR

    My issue with federal gun control has nothing really to do with the 2nd amendment, but rather the 10th. Even if the 2nd amendment didn’t exist, how do you justify the federal government assuming the powers to confiscate our guns or any private property? The power to do this has never been allocated to them. It is not in the US Constitution. We don’t get our rights from the US Constitution, they, the federal government, gets its rights from that Constitution. Yet they have turned its perception of it as if it grants or does not grant us rights! Its amazing how they’ve managed to fundamentally turn the whole perception of what the constitution is about.
