There is a bill on the fast track in the U.S. Senate (§ 909) that would not only criminalize free speech but provide elevated protection to pedophiles.
The bill is euphemistically called “The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.”
I call it “The Pedophile Protection Act.”
It was exposed as such when an amendment to exclude pedophiles from special legal protections, offered by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, was rejected by the Democrats in the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Florida, admitted from the House Floor that this bill put 547 forms of sexual deviancies listed by the American Psychiatric Association, which he referred to as “all of these ‘philias’ and fetishes and ‘isms,’” on the same level of elevated protection as “race … religion … gender … or disability.”

Law prof Eugene Volokh blogs about a U.S. House of Representatives bill proposed by Rep. Linda T. Sanchez and 14 others that could make it a federal felony to use your blog, social media like MySpace and Facebook, or any other web media “To Cause Substantial Emotional Distress Through “Severe, Repeated, and Hostile” Speech.”
Here’s the relevant text:
Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person, using electronic means to support severe, repeated, and hostile behavior, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both….
