The SIPC stepped in and helped out the victims of the Madoff scam, up to $500,000. Of course that didn't cover the entire amount for all the victims, but it was better than nothing. So people investing in a retirement program would be well advised to spread out their investments, so that the total amount in any single fund doesn't exceed the maximum amount covered by the SIPC.
