Ron Paul: Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong support of this resolution. I thank the gentleman from Ohio for bringing this issue up.

It is late. This war started ten years ago; it’s about time we talked about it. It was said earlier on it is hard to quit a war and we shouldn’t be quitting. I’ll tell you what the real problem is: it’s too easy to start a war, it’s too easy to get involved and that is our problem.

The founders of this country tried very hard to prevent this kind of a dilemma that we’re in now — getting involved in no-win wars and nobody knowing exactly who the enemy is. The war was started and justified by quoting and using the War Powers Resolution written in 1973. That was written after the fiasco of Vietnam to try to prevent the problems of slipping into war. Yet that resolution in itself was unconstitutional because it literally legalized war for 90 days. So, it did exactly the opposite, so here we are. The 90-day permission for war at that time, now it’s close to ten years. I’m afraid that this is a little bit too little, hopefully not too late for us to do something about this. Are we going to do it for ten more years? How long are we going to stay? And the enemy is said to be the Taliban. Well, the Taliban, they certainly don’t like us, and we don’t like them. The more we kill the more of the Taliban we get.

But I want to quote the first line of the resolution passed back in 2001, what the purpose of giving the president the power which was an illegal transfer of power to the president to pursue war at will. It said, “The authorities are to authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the recent attacks launched against the United States.” The Taliban did not launch an attack against the United States. The government of Afghanistan did not launch it. The best evidence is that of those 20 individuals, 2 of them might have passed through Afghanistan. A lot of the planning was done in Germany and Spain and the training was done here in the United States. Oh yes, the image is that they all conspired, a small group of people with Bin Laden and made this decision. Right now the evidence is not there to prove that, but certainly Bin Laden was very sympathetic, loved it, and wanted to take credit for it. And one of the reasons why he wanted to take credit was that he said it would do three things for what he wanted.

First it would do is it would enhance his recruitment efforts for Al-Qaeda and his attack against Western powers who have become overly involved in control of the Middle East and have had a plan for 20 years to remake the Middle East. He also said that the consequence of 9/11 will be that “we will bog the American people down in a no-win war and demoralize the people.” And they’re working on it. There is still a lot of moral support but there is a lot of people in this country now that our country is totally bankrupt and we’re spending trillions of dollars on these useless wars that people will become demoralized because history shows that all empires end because they expand too far and they bankrupt the country just as the Soviet system came down. And that’s what Bin Laden was hoping for.

He also said that the dollars spent will bankrupt this country, and we are bankrupt and yet there is no hesitation to quit spending one cent overseas. We built embassies in Baghdad, we’ve built an embassy in Kabul, billion-dollar embassies, fortresses and it’s all “necessary”. Nobody is really concerned. If people were concerned about the disastrous effect of debt on this country, we would change our foreign policy and we would be safer for it. We are not safer because of this foreign policy. It’s a policy of intervention that has been going on for a long time and it will eventually end.

This war is an illegal war. This war is an immoral war. This war is an unconstitutional war. And the least you can say it is illegitimate. There is no real purpose in this. The Taliban did not attack us on 9-11. After we went into Afghanistan, immediately the concerns were shifted into remaking the Middle East. We went into Iraq, used this as a justification. It was nothing more than an excuse. Most Americans, the majority of Americans still believe that Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11. And I imagine most Americans believe the Taliban had something to do with 9/11 and it is not true. We have to change our foreign policy and come back to our senses and defend this country and not pretend to be the policeman of the world.

  2. I like what I hear from Ron Paul about ending the illegal, criminal wars.
However, I believe he has his facts wrong. Bin Laden did not take credit for the attacks on the US. He denied any involvement. there is no warrant for his arrest from the FBI for the crime of 911. Only other crimes.

Ron paul and Dennis are singing to the wrong people.
they must take this to the American people. The Congress and the President of the US have been conquered by the bakers. They own both the Repub's and the Dem's lock, stock and barrel
Its so strange I hear nothing from Paul about the RIGGED elections in the USA.
    How come.?

Obama should enact into law publically 10% right off the top goes to God. The Muslims will realize that America recognizes God first and they themselves will shut down the Muslim Gehad.

    • I didn't quite get your first sentence but as far as your second sentence "The Muslims will realize that America recognizes God first and they themselves will shut down the Muslim Gehad."

I am not sure if you ever travel to a Muslim country or have Muslim neighbor or even have a conversation with a fairly knowledgeable Muslim, they will tell you that the Muslim do believe that the majority of westerners (US/Europe or christian) nation do believe in god.
The Muslim believe in "Allah" which maybe equivalent to Holly ghost in Christianity.

They do believe in Adam, Noah, Moses, Jesus and Mohammad etc..as some of the major prophet/messenger of Islam religion.
The only deference I see so far between the Islam and the Christianity is that the Muslim do not believe Jesus as being a god but they do have a full and equivalent respect to Jesus, Moses as much as they do for Mohammad.

I also would like to explain you the word Gehad or usually spelled "Jihad"
According to the online dictionary (dictionary.com)
      1. Islam a holy war against infidels undertaken by Muslims in defence of the Islamic faith
      2. Islam the personal struggle of the individual believer against evil and persecution
      3. rare a crusade in support of a cause

      According to "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jihad" the word Jihad means;
Jihad (pronounced /dʒɪˈhɑːd/; Arabic: جهاد‎ [dʒiˈhæːd]), an Islamic term, is a religious duty of Muslims. In Arabic, the word jihād is a noun meaning "struggle." Jihad appears frequently in the Qur'an and common usage as the idiomatic expression "striving in the way of Allah (al-jihad fi sabil Allah)".[1][2] A person engaged in jihad is called a mujahid; the plural is mujahideen. Jihad is an important religious duty for Muslims. A minority among the Sunni scholars sometimes refer to this duty as the sixth pillar of Islam, though it occupies no such official status.[3] In Twelver Shi'a Islam, however, Jihad is one of the 10 Practices of the Religion.

According to today’s Media anywhere from CNN, FOX etc.. to Rush Limbaugh. they portray and translate the Jihad as sole meaning to fight the westerners, killing of Infidel, etc etc.. which is completely flawed.

In my own opinion the word “jihad” would be probably equivalent to “fight against” or “war on” which we use quite often for example the war on terror, the war on drugs, fight against corruption, fight against drug traffickers etc..

Don’t let anyone give you the wrong idea of Islam/Muslim, Christian/Christianity, Jews/Judaism . The more I read through Islamic books the more I liked it. I hope you go to the source of Islamic books.

Always go to the source. Do your own re-search.
Sorry for going off the topic above

      • Thank you ProudTex

There are many reasons we are in the mess we are in, and in my opinion our ignorance and followed with knee jerk reactions are a major one. Be it a War on Terror, a War on Drugs, a War on Crime, etc.

When we take the time to ask question and research for the answers - count to zen, instead of just following the words of warmongers and demagog leaders, and racist - we become some what enlitened and only then can we begin to know and understand.
Sure there are a few Muslims that want to do us and others harm, but it is not, in this case, the whole of Islam. And I'll go a little further, though never popular to point out, but there are more crazed Christian Fundamentalist then there are fanatical Muslims. True, for what we know Christians aren't straping bombs to their body and blowing up buses and cafes...They take a much more conventional approach with killing innocent lives: Cluster bombs, depleated uranium, drone planes, nukes, helocopters equipt with 50mm cannons, long range missles, economic sanctions, starvation, etc, etc.
But not all Christians engage in or support such practices. If you go back to the Vietnam war era there were groups, many of them Christians, that protested the war and commited nonviolent acts of civil disobedience as a means of fighting. Today there are still many who protest in such a manner, and the come from many walks of like.

Bottom line, One mustn't shame others when he is just as guilty of such wicked ways. War begot war begot war.

  6. Hey Ben,

Curiously, have you ever heard of Project For New American Century that is a CORE of present American fireign policy? That makes huge difference between now and WW II. Yes, Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld-Wolfowitz invented modern perpetual wars to please and feed our monstrous military-industrial complex about which President Eisenhower warned you. It is understandable to blame them for unnecessary deaths of "their' and "our" people. Just people. It is easy to start wars as you might have learn from history.

And what you do? Watch Tiger and sports on TV choking with popcorn and calling other people idiots? Calm down, read and explore, be humble if you are not an idiot.

Okay, former neocon idiot. I must have missed that sign on the way in. "If you're not here to kiss Paul's ass, then please leave." Sounds like you're afraid that people who see through Paul's facade might be able to make their case on this site.

Seriously. I frequent a lot of different political blogs. Some I like because they echo my thoughts. Others I like because they represent the opposition. I leave comments at both. Is that all right wth you, (former neocon) idiot? Is this a citicism free zone?

    • Ben,

You have been putting comments on this site for a while and we are glad to have you BUT do remember that we can’t guarantee you from not being attacked when you spit non-sense. Those who attack you it is because you’re against the very first and most valuable principles of this country “the constitution” not much about being against Ron Paul. Do remember that Ron Paul is a constitutionalist and usually your attack because of that.

You know, you can’t be setting in a church and start spitting at the priest because you are against the priest teaching of bible. You can’t set in a synagogue and start going haywire on Jews. You can’t just set in the mosque and start a fight with Muslim preacher of Qur'an.

Take my advise, just a little common sense will take you a long way. I promise you!

  8. Okay, former necon idiot--are you formerly a neocon or formerly an idiot?

Blaming the death of your cousin on George Bush is just insane. I had a great uncle who was shot down over France in World War II. Never met him, of course. Did Roosevelt kill him? Of course not.

Yes, your cousin was killed by some al_Qaeda/Baathist/Iranian/Fill in the blank.

Following your logic, Ron Paul has killed all of the troops who have died in Afghanistan. Not single-handdely, of course. But he was one vote among many for this war that was undeclared by Congress. They died because Ron Paul sent them there to die. Right?

The part about being undeclared by Congress is key. After all, according to you: "If we are going to go to war it should be done through a proper declaration of congress..."So why are you still supporting this doofus Paul again? It can't be because he's the last honest man in Washington (he's not), it can't be because he always follows the constitution (he doesn't), and it can't be because he's solidly consistent what-you-see-is-what-you-get (he isn't).

    • Hey Ben,
Paul voted for a 90 day police action (se the War Powers Act) to go after some of the 9-11 perps.
Not quite the same as a 10year 'war' involving 3, and soon to be more, other countries.

Though your point is well taken (above) about 'buzzing off', I would simply ask that you back your rhetoric w/ facts. (We won't hold our breath)

p.s. Please let us know when you find that politician that is more 'constitutional' or more consistent than Ron Paul. (Again, We won't hold our breath)

Fred, this is a site for Ron Paul supporters and you are obviously not one of them so buzz off.

I happen to agree with Paul on foreign policy. If we are going to go to war it should be done through a proper declaration of congress, and we should get in and out as quickly as possible. Don't forget the 'underwear bomber' was trained in Yemen, not Iraq or Afghanistan. So do we invade Yemen next? Are we just going to invade every country in the middle east? If so, we will be at war for the next 100 years and I honestly don't think the American people are going to go along with it. I believe we can have a strong national defense and good intelligence without spending all this money and killing our kids.

I had a young cousin (marine) who was killed in Iraq in 05. At the funeral a bunch of us were talking about the "towel headed bastards" who murdered him, and his mother turned around and snapped (I'll never forget): "those terrorists didn't kill my son, George Bush did". At the time I thought she was just speaking through her grief, but now I totally understand where she was coming from.

The christmas bomber proves that the terrorists still want to kill us, despite these wars, so how are they benefiting anyone other than the defense contractors?

  12. Why Americans have NO idea of what Project for New American Century is all about????????? Why the hell not??? It is about militaristic World domination, you can read and see for yourself.

    Go http://www.newamericancentury.org/

read on page 51 of Rebuilding America's Defence (http://www.newamericancentury.org/RebuildingAmericasDefenses.pdf):

Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some
catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor.

Designed and SIGNED by Cheney, Libby, Bushes, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz etc...
They all desirtred for the above CATALYZING effect back in September 2000, a year before actual 9/11 occurred to their expectations.

Then wars followed. For freedom and democracy......

    Why you DO NOT read?????

    • The problem with that is America can not and shall not take over the world. Do you have any idea what that kind of power does to fragile and ignorant human beings? It will ultimately be our downfall. I say keep the world diverse, but stick to our borders. All of us, as people of the world, need to understand this planet is unique.. so far as fact goes to show.. in the way that it is the ONLY to support life. We are the ONLY civilizations for light years and light years.

If keeping to ourselves and doing what we have to do to make our little "slices of the global pie" great, then so be it. The American Empire will fall as all great empires before it did. History.. past, present, future.. it's written in stone.

Immigration. Real Americans oppose immigration because they don't want their jobs stolen, not because they cost Richie Rich tax money in social services.

NAFTA. Real Americans oppose NAFTA not because it isn't "pure enough", but because it cost them good paying jobs.

  14. concerned citizen

Ron Paul really IS the only politician who talks for the people. Some rather aggressive comments probably come from numbskulls trying to sabotage Dr Paul's honesty-expected but not excused. Some people hate the truth. Washington DC has become like a theater show. The actors are all pumped full of cheery backslapping and botox, and everyone illicits rapacious cheers as they announce their (ridiculous) plans to increase spending for "imaginary" wars on terror. The Oscar should really go to Mr Obama who deserves credit for his performance as the Jimmy Neutron of the 21 century. He can invent a way to fix anything. Deficit? What defecit? Mid East? All the zionists on my cabinet will fix that, we'll just keep building houses on Palestinian land! Healthcare? "Hey Mr Bernanke, can ya rustle up more of those greenbacks?". And somewhere in the back ground, the LONE voice of reason. A conscientious objector to the audacity spewed out by the likes of Hillary (I'll do anything for a freebee) Clinton, Queen ("I fly tax payer funded jumbo from SF to DC") Pelosi and all the other neocons whose egos are so gratuitously inflated that they barely have space to fit through a door of reason. The lone voice, consistent, mannered, transparent and void of the dander of those other"politicians". Dr Ron Paul. Long live the King. There will be no secrets in his past. Mr Paul, if elected will be one of the greatest Presidents of America because of his, honesty, intelligence, humanity and....rumpled old suit.....

  17. If Ron Paul's so upset that our troops are kicking terrorists butts in Afghanistan, why'd he vote to send them there?

It was a war undeclared by Congress, embarked upon by the authority of the president. Doesn't Ron Paul know that the President doesn't have that authority, only Congress does?

What a shady character this Paul is. Yes, he's a rock star all right. He's got loads of adoring fans who can't come up with a coherent argument between them. He's managed to assemble a hodgepodge of Stormfronters, KKK members, 9/11 truthers, and masonic conspiracy theorists. Joy Behar thinks he's great. So does Arlo Guthrie. I feel so silly not voting for him. I mean, when you think about it, there is no other candidate... is there?

    • Dr. Ron Paul, Setting the Record Straight

      http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/538207/dr_ron_paul_setting_the_record_straight_pg2.html?cat=17

"THE IRAQ WAR WAS SOLD TO US WITH FALSE INFORMATION. The area is more dangerous now than when we entered it. We destroyed a regime hated by our direct enemies, the jihadists, and created thousands of new recruits for them. This war has cost more than 3,000 American lives, thousands of seriously wounded, and hundreds of billions of dollars. We must have new leadership in the White House to ensure this never happens again.

Both Jefferson and Washington warned us about entangling ourselves in the affairs of other nations. Today, we have troops in 130 countries. We are spread so thin that we have too few troops defending America. And now, there are new calls for a draft of our young men and women. "

    • You mean well but Ron has too much integrity to be called a rock star.Rock stars want glory without too much effort or getting their hands dirty.Where are the Rock stars or the Hollywood glamours supporting you or Ron ?

Ron has the courage of his convictions and has worked tirelessly for decades what is right. Most of Congress sadly lacks any notions of fairness in the tradition of the great US constitution .Shame on them and their avaricious depravity.

Ron Paul is a shining light in a sea of despair.

  20. Go Ron! Obviously our Government's interest lies with the control of every other country but it's own. The American Empire will fall like every great empire before it as history teaches us and those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. This modern day Vietnam war has the people of America asking questions we were discouraged to ask since 9/11, it has the people begging for peace, it's got us all broke from spending our tax money, borrowed money and fake (fiat) money, trillions a year, on a war that we have no chance of winning!

We have no clear enemy, and the fingers point to groups that weren't even responsible for the attacks on September 11th. I'm am appalled by the World Police of America. All we're doing is creating tension and a horrible global image that we, as pompous and arrogant as our government makes us out to look, the American people have to deal with. Why? Because we never ask why. Because the people are taking comfort in letting secret banks print us money and allowing thousands to die in the name of what.. freedom? I ask you all, America, is this a war for freedom? Is this a war for justice? Does this war represent anything our founding fathers designed this once great country to represent? No.

Ron Paul for President, year 2012.
