Ron Paul Wins Charity Award that went to Ronald Reagan

The Charity Awards Committee presented Ron Paul with its distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual banquet at the Dulles Hyatt in Washington, D.C. on December 3, 2010. The Charity Awards is a bi-partisan event that has been hosted by the White House in both Democrat and Republican administrations. It first presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to President Ronald Reagan in the East Room in 1982.

Citing his lifetime of work in promoting the rights of private sector charities, entertainer Pat Boone, Co-Chairman of the Awards Committee, described Congressman Ron Paul as America’s foremost champion of the Constitutional rights of nongovernmental organizations.

Speaking for the Committee, Co-Chairman and presidential historian, Doug Wead said, “At a time of great economic recession, when Americans are more dependent on charity and the goodwill of volunteers than ever before, Ron Paul’s voice has been a lonely sentinel holding back well intentioned but costly new government regulations for nonprofit work.”

Among other honors, the Committee voted a Charity in Sports Award to Sam Lamantia, Jr., one of the organizers behind NFL Charities, a Charity Advocate Award to Judge Andrew Napolitano, a Charity in the Arts Award to Brian Kilmeade, co-host of Fox and Friends and a Corporate Charity Award to Anne Beiler founder of Auntie Anne’s Pretzels.

The Charity Awards was founded in 1979, Rosalynn Carter was its first Honorary Chairperson and since then eight presidents and first ladies have attended the event.
