If there's no way we could do SS properly, how did we do it the last 70+ years? Right now Social Security is sitting on a 2.5 trillion surplus, and is fully funded for the next 25+ years..Even then it would fund 75% of it's obligations till 2085, which they didn't look past. Fix the economy and there's no small shortfall in 25 years. If there is, raise the cap a little past 106k. Why the rich only pay SS tax on 106k of earnings is beyond me. I think the surplus is in bonds, tho.

Our money was not safe with Lehman, AIG, Sterns, Countrywide, Lynch, Wachovia, National, Stocks, 401k, PERS, I can go on all day. I love Ron Paul, but I have to disagree with him on this one. Social Security is one of the most cost effective programs ever penned. Check the facts, Congress blew the money on wars, banks, tax breaks for billionaires, corporate welfare. It will take an average of 18 years to collect the principal on what we pay in! Where's our money going?!!!

As a person living on Disability, I see Ron Paul much like a Jew does seeing Adolph Hitler running for office in 1933. I know that he has nothing but cruelty and death in store for me if he seizes power. He would tear away my Social Security Disability and leave me to rot in the street.

"Although administered by the Social Security Administration,[2] SSI is funded from the U.S. Treasury general funds,[1] not the Social Security trust fund."

:p Yes yes, paying our veterans and providing rent for the elderly and disabled is a Ponzi Scheme. Social Darwinism and chance charity is just so much better. There's no way we could do SSI properly.

He said "THE MONEY ISN'T IN THE COFFERS!!!" I never said the US government was broke because of SSI. I'd bet that disabled people who need money are a tiny fraction of the US budget.

I will however say that Social Security is a ponzi scheme and I would opt out right now even though I've paid in for over 20 years now.

It's obvious what the problems are with the US deficit problems. It's just that most don't care.

You're misrepresenting the context significantly. He's talking about the threat of a congressional shutdown and what it would do if the staffers weren't there to send out the checks.

And the US Government isn't broke because of SSI, taking away veteran's pensions and old/disabled people's rent checks isn't going to fix our economy. You've let corporations trick you into blaming entitlements.
