Ron Paul’s Opt-Out Offer: Pay 10% to Get the Government Off Your Back?

Ron Paul joined the discussion on “Stossel” to explain his “opt-out offer” to the American people, where individuals could choose to opt out and get the government off their backs for the rest of their lives by simply paying 10% of their incomes. Additional topics include criticism and misrepresentation of Ron Paul’s message, the problem of coercion, and various questions from the audience.

I’m 100% behind Ron, but he’s got to drop this topic. He sounds nutty. Sure it’s a good idea but it’s too difficult to explain to people.

Opting out is choice, it’s obvious all theses government programs are failing, social security, Medicare, wellfare and financial aid etc. Essentially making yourself more responsible with your own money rather then some polictians spend it for you

how about the fact that the federal government has no authority to tax your compensation for labor at any percentage? He saved himself at the end, but its clear he is supportive of the continued exaction of our earned monies just because people continually accept the requirement that one be a “US Citizen” with their precious SSN, which gives this government the Right to tax you whatever they dang wish! How about an end to the SSA?

I paid my own way through college, by working, some people in the US believe they are “entitled” to have everything “given” to them!

My only problem with this is, there are several people with cancer, mental retardation, disfigurement, blindness, etc… Would this mean no help for them as well?

To those concerned that people will be dying in the street, you need to think about all of the ramifications of “opting out”. The reason why higher education is so expensive is because of the government. Same for healthcare. No public schools wouldn’t mean NO schools. It would mean that there would likely be many more private options for educating children, options that wouldn’t necessarily be more expensive than the taxes you pay to public education. There would be a much wider variety of education options.

When you think that having not government wouldn’t work, you need to broaden your thinking. That is difficult because we have been living in a nanny state for so long. Getting the government out of our way WOULD provide more choices and WOULD make life better.

Also, ideally you would pay less than 5%, which would go almost entirely to defense, which is actually legitimate.

Ron Paul’s “opt out” & pay just 10% to the Federal Government in taxes was not initially meant to be taken seriously… just a possible idea he “threw out” to try & get a reaction as to how we can wean the nation off of our dependency on the Federal Government. The fact that it got so much attention shows a great desire on the part of many to figure out the best way to accomplish that goal. I feel sorry for people/families with special needs or who can’t afford private education, etc. But a “one size fits all” big Federal program is not the solution. Let the Sates experiment, if they so desire. Voters can vote with their feet & go to the State they like best.

I support Ron Paul. Though, I do have concerns about the opting out. Ron Paul’s idea to give 10% to the government and we keep the rest seems good in theory but it seems to idealogical and naive to expect most people to survive. He stated that we would have to opt out of all gov’t programs. This includes education, medical and other social programs that enable some people to survive. One concern is that my husband and I work very hard to support our family, as a result, we can not stay home and be the sole educators for our children. Another concern is that my teenage son has type 1 diabetes and his medication/supplies is about $500-600 a month, that does not include dr appointments and a rare hospital stay. We wouldn’t be able to afford the medical bills and survive. It’s easy to say “we’ll opt out” but we need to look at the ramifications of that decision. Are we willing to opt out of health insurance when our children could possibly die? When our spouse is plagued with cancer or a debilitating disease? Are we willing to let our children go without an education if we are unable to be adequate teachers due to time restraints? We will have people dying in the streets and it won’t be the wealthy. It could end up being a form of population control for the poor and sick. We’re living in a different era than what Ron Paul is referring to. Higher education will never be close to $300.00 a semester. I would have a difficult time opting out when I know I would be burying my son shortly after. This maybe be the option for the future but we need to clearly understand the consequences of that decision before we say a quick “yes”.

Ron Paul’s legacy will be to restore the republican party after splitting it and routing out the traitors.

Your legacy will be to talk about things like boners, anuses and whatever other personal sexual issues you failed to resolve in your youth. That is your legacy along with being a shil for the devil.
