Ron Paul: Corporations Are NOT People

Transcript

Mitt Romney: And there are various ways of doing that. One is we could raise taxes on people. That’s not the way…

Audience: Corporations! Corporations!

Mitt Romney: Corporations are people, my friend. We could raise taxes on… Of course they are. Everything a corporation earns also goes to people.

Audience: Hahaha

Mitt Romney: So… where do you think it goes?

Audience: Pockets.

Mitt Romney: Whose pockets? Whose pockets? People’s pockets. Okay… human beings, my friend.

Interviewer: Real quick question for you… What did you make of Mitt Romney’s statement that corporations are people yesterday?

Ron Paul: Well obviously, they are not. People are individuals, they’re not groups and they’re not companies. Individuals have rights, they’re not collective. You can’t duck that. So individuals should be responsible for corporations, and they shouldn’t be a new creature so-to-speak. Rights and obligations should be always back to the individual.

  1. Another off the cuff crowd pleaser.

“Well, I think the person who labels themselves a corporation would have equal rights whether they’re an independent business group or a newspaper company.”- Ron Paul, Thom Hartman

    Ron Paul = Consistently Inconsistent

  3. Romney is a flip-flopping empty suit, appeals to the cowards who just want someone who can “get elected”. Why don’t you stop being a Sheep and look at the man’s record and vote on principle, instead of the False Right-Left Paradigm? It doesn’t matter whether it’s Romney or Obama, they both share tacit support for the status-quo: more war, more spending, fewer civil liberties, both bought and paid for by Wall Street. Wake up!

  4. they dont mean the same, romney was trying to show that corporations cant magically pay taxes, the taxes end up with people. what ron paul was trying to say is that corporations shouldnt have special rights because they are supposedly also people (which they aren’t).
so romney is right in that taxing corporations really just means taxing people, but that doesn’t mean the corporations themselves are people like ron paul said.

    this video is misleading.

  5. The important thing to remember is that corporations don’t have inalienable rights. The government grants corporations their charter: to incorporate, to do interstate business, military protection, etc. as an entity. The government grants those rights in exchange for tax revenue and social responsibility. If corporations fail to meet their obligations, or become a burden to the people, the government has a responsibility to dissolve the corporate charter. It is a horrible mistake to pretend otherwise.

  6. This is one of the few statements that Romney has made which I agree with. I think it’s not inconsistent with Ron Paul’s beliefs. Corporations are just groups of people– like sports teams, debate clubs, or families. Am I missing the fundamental point that Ron Paul made?
