Ron Paul: True Liberty vs. Perfect Safety

Government Cannot Protect Us From Violence

by Ron Paul

Recent incidents of violence in Norway and London have made us understandably uncomfortable here at home, as many fear that a worsening economy will lead to violence and unrest in American cities. This is why Congress must view the economy as its first priority and a matter of national security. Unless and until we get our fiscal house in order to foster economic growth, civil society will continue to deteriorate.

The fundamental lesson every American should learn from these incidents is that government cannot protect us. No matter how many laws we pass, no matter how many police or federal agents we put on the streets, a determined individual or group can still cause great harm. But Norway and England have strict gun control laws, and London in particular has security cameras monitoring nearly all public areas. But laws and spy cameras are useless in the face of lawless mobs or sick mass killers.

Only private individuals on the scene could have prevented or lessened these tragedies. We should remember that theft, arson and property damage were not the only criminal acts in London. Innocent bystanders were assaulted and killed as well. In those instances, deadly force used in self-defense would have been fully justified.

Perhaps the only good that could come from these terrible events is a reinforced understanding that we as individuals are responsible for our safety and the safety of our families. This means frankly that we must own and wisely use firearms to deter or prevent criminal assaults on our homes and persons. It is absurd to think police or government agents can protect 310 million Americans around the clock.

Thanks to our media and many government officials, however, Americans have have become conditioned to view the state as our protector and the solution to every problem. Whenever something terrible happens, especially when it becomes a prominent news story, people reflexively demand that government “do something.” This impulse almost always leads to bad laws, more debt and a loss of liberty. It is completely at odds with the best American traditions of self-reliance and individual responsibility.

Do we really want to live in a world of police checkpoints, surveillance cameras and metal detectors? Do we want to imprison every disturbed or alienated individual who fantasizes about violence? Do we really believe government can provide total security? Or can we accept that liberty is more important than the illusion of state-provided security?

Freedom is not defined by safety; freedom is defined by the ability of citizens to live without government interference – unless they use force or fraud against others. Government cannot create a world without risk, nor would we really wish to live in such a fictional place. Only a totalitarian society would even claim absolute safety as a worthy ideal, because it would require total state control over its citizens’ lives. Liberty has meaning only if we still believe in it when terrible things happen and a false government security blanket beckons.

This rather small move toward Ron Paul is nothing but desperation and because the teabagger field is so dismal so far. Soon the Repubs will come up with a real mainstream candidate that can at least stand a chance against Obama. Enjoy Ron’s last hurrah while you can, he’ll soon be forgotten as a dismal failure as a presidential candidate.

    • Drew

Small move? Can you read? have you read the recent polls? He is consistently 3rd behind Perry, who is a flash in the pan. If he takes 1st or 2nd in iowa and 2nd in NH and keeps raising $ like this….You will eat your thoughtless words.

Don’t all you fellow RON PAUL supporters love the use of “mainstream?” It makes me laugh every time. RON PAUL 2012

      • Michael

That’s the key to the mystery you people are baffled over Drew. He’s third behind Perry who is a flash in the pan and could never be elected by the sane majority of the people. Only people who have lost touch with reality and who hate Obama would think that any of the teabaggers like Perry, Bachman, Paul, Santorum, Palin, and other trash could ever appeal to enough people to make any of them president.

Don’t worry, reality will come back to you all soon with the big disappointment that’s waiting for all whackjobs who support Ron Paul. Then tell your mom that Michael warned you!

        • Drew

i am not baffled over anything michael. You are just being mean spirited not factual or fair in your presentation. The truth is RON PAUL is doing very well in the polls and in fund raising to say he is not isn’t being honest. RON PAUL is not a flash in the pan, he has been saying the same things for 30 years…people are just listening now.

          • Michael

Only trying to prepare you people for the big letdown Drew. But when it comes you’ll all deserve it. Maybe then you will all think again before you are taken in by cheap talk of the sort that spews from Ron Paul’s cakehole. Maybe you will come to see how you were taken in by cheap rhetoric that could never become a part of a capitalist/democratic government. I’m embarrassed for you, really and truly Drew.

And as for Ron Paul? He should be strung up by his heels for misleading so many simpleminded people into ever thinking that his libertarian agenda could ever be put to the test.

        • Drew

oh by the way, RON PAUL has more intelligence in his left pinky toe than the other clowns you just mentioned in your previous post.

        • Drew

We will not be let down Michael. We will keep fighting the good fight.

Why do you have no substance to any of your posts? You throw mud and call RON PAUL and his supporters names….You must be one unhappy person michael. I really feel bad for you.

  • ProgressiveInAmerica

Ron Paul? More like Ron Butt!!!

  • MatthewMcRazz

Ron Paul needs to go away. Paul is disillusioned with this crazy talk of immediately pullings our troops out of Afghanistan, wanting to remove our forces from our bases that we’ve spent decades to build. He also wants to go back to the 19th century by returning to a “gold standard”. Its a joke. Don’t you get it? Perry/Bachmann 2012.

Perry/Bawkmann? Is that the neocon dream ticket or the nutjob dream ticket?
Oh sorry. I didn’t immediately realize that it’s a combination of both. ROFL! They are both corporate morons and Bawkmann is a farm subsidy welfare rat. How’s that going to play out on the campaign trail? She’s sinking almost as fast as Perry will soon.

Ron Paul/Judge Napolitano is the winning combination.

The media, and it’s controllers, is America’s No. 1 problem.

The media misleads the public. The media selects a candidate for President and 100% support it. They give him as much positive exposure as possible. At the same time they support an opposition leader that can’t and will not win, to create a false opposition candidate.

The innocent public vote for the candidates the media pushed.

Therefore elections become show business. The public vote for the most liked candidate.

The public is kept uninformed and ignorant by the media.

This means democracy is a Hoax. The so called “mainstream media” is a carefully controlled propaganda machine.

Ron Paul, you need to address this media control & manipulation in congress, and in your campaign.

    • Ross Johnson

Manny ,They are not the media.Gerald Celente calls them,”Pressitutes”.

    • DC

I agree. It is more of a popularity contest than a presidential election.

Ron Paul 2012: Your Last Chance To Get It Correct, America!

  • Chelsea

I am SO thankful for the integrity and consistency Ron Paul has. He has my vote and hopefully many of my friends and family’s as well. If they haven’t learned about him, I’ll share! He’s a true example and leader…I feel like for the first time (in my lifetime at least) we have a human candidate! -being that too many of the actions our current and previous presidents have taken over and over are inhumane. Ron Paul cares for not only our nations future, but for our individual futures as well. 🙂

  • AustralianAllTheWay
