News Anchor: FEMA is once again in the spotlight as an agency that is directed to offer federal disaster relief. Texas Congressman and presidential candidate, Ron Paul, says the program is inefficient and should be scrapped. Joining us now by phone is Congressman Ron Paul. Congressman, welcome, it’s great to have you here today.
Ron Paul: Thank you.
News Anchor: At a time when the Gulf is being hit by a tropical storm and is still cleaning up from Hurricane Irene, are you suggesting that FEMA is helping to ruin the economy?
Ron Paul: No, I haven’t said that, and I haven’t called for the immediate abolishment of FEMA, so I think that’s a little bit of misrepresentation. But when I’m asked whether I think they are very efficient at doing their job or whether we ever should have had it, the answer is no. But the hurricanes have hit our coast, I don’t vote for that insurance because I think the insurance invites more people to take risky behavior and put their houses where they shouldn’t be. But I’d try to make the program work, I’d like to make it efficient enough to do the job. But it has no money, it’s 20 million dollars in debt and all we have to do is look at the history of FEMA along with coast, you know, whether it was Katrina or when …
