Ron Paul on 9/11: Ask the Right Questions and Face the Truth

by Ron Paul

Ten years ago shocking and horrific acts of terrorism were carried out on US soil, taking over 3,000 innocent American lives. Without a doubt, this action demanded retaliation and retribution. However, much has been done in the name of protecting the American people from terrorism that has reduced our prosperity and liberty and even made us less safe. This is ironic and sad, considering that the oft-repeated line concerning the reasoning behind the attacks is that they hate us for who we are – a free, prosperous people – and that we must not under any circumstances allow the terrorists to win.

Though it is hard for many to believe, honest studies show that the real motivation behind the September 11 attacks and the vast majority of other instances of suicide terrorism is not that our enemies are bothered by our way of life. Neither is it our religion, or our wealth. Rather, it is primarily occupation. If you were to imagine for a moment how you would feel if another country forcibly occupied the United States, had military bases and armed soldiers present in our hometowns, you might begin to understand why foreign occupation upsets people so much. Robert Pape has extensively researched this issue and goes in depth in his book “Cutting the Fuse: The Explosion of Global Suicide Terrorism and How to Stop It”. In fact, of 2,200 incidents of suicide attacks he has studied worldwide since 1980, 95% were in response to foreign occupation.

Pape notes that before our invasion of Iraq, only about 10% of suicide terrorism was aimed at Americans or American interests. Since, then however, not only is suicide terrorism greatly on the rise, but 91% of it is now directed at us.

Yes, the attacks of 9/11 deserved a response. But the manner in which we responded has allowed radicals in the Muslim world to advance a very threatening narrative about us and our motivation in occupying their lands. Osama bin Laden referred to us as “crusaders” with a religious agenda to convert Muslims, westernize their culture and take control of their resources. If we had targeted our response to only the thugs and criminals who attacked us, and refrained from invading countries that had nothing to do with it, this characterization would seem less plausible to the desperate and displaced. Blaming Islam alone is grossly misleading.

Instead, we chose a course of action that led to the further loss of 8,000 American lives, left 40,000 wounded and has hundreds of thousands seeking help at the Veterans Administration. We are three to four trillion dollars poorer. Our military is spread dangerously thin around the globe, at the expense of protection here at home. Not only that, but we have allowed our freedoms to be greatly threatened and undermined from within. The Patriot Act, warrantless searches and wiretapping, abuse of habeus corpus, useless and humiliating searches at airports are just a few examples of how we’ve allowed the terrorists to “win” by making our country less free.

Suicide terrorism did not exist in Iraq before we got there. Now it does. There are no known instances of Iranians committing suicide terrorism. If we invade and occupy Iran, expect that to change, too.

Sometimes it can be very uncomfortable to ask the right questions and face the truth. When a slick politician comes along and gives a much more soothing, self-congratulating version of events, it is very tempting to simply believe what we would like to hear. But listening to lies does not make us safer, even though it might make us feel better about ourselves.

The truth is that ending these misguided wars and occupations will make us safer, more prosperous and more free.

  6. I don't agree with the war as its turned out or keeping our troops out there but there will be no safety for a nation that's turned away from God and allows illegal immigration to stand. Best of luck to you anyway Ron Paul. I hope you win, and the blind open their eyes. The second very unlikely.

  7. Going with the flow is one thing, stopping that flow and creating an opposite flow is totally different.
Ronpaul stood with his message when it was unpopular and he is still promoting the same message i.e. Less gov, follow the constitution, avoid unnecessary wars over seas, bring our troops home and put America back on track by reducing the debt etc etc the difference is that what he had said about economy and blow back effect.... is coming out to be true! So in a sense when his message was unpopular he stood by it like an honest man and opposed all the pundits! Now that his message is making more news media started ignoring him but he doesn't care about presidency or popularity for himself what he cares about is the orginal values America holds and the power of liberty.
All these blood sucking politicians hiding behind the curtain of so called biased media are scared because if Ron paul gets as much attention as the other candidates are there is no doubt in my mind he will turn the tables around.
And one last point I would like to make:
We the people don't have to blame media and selfish politicians all the time because in the end it would be the people of this country making the choice about their leaders, so the real problem also exists with people as well.

    • I totally agree with you. American citizens became ignorant therefore allowing politicians and bankers to take advantage of our ignorance. As long as life is easy for us we'll do what anyone tells us to. Its ridiculous

  10. So if their problem was with "occupation" why would they carry out such a devastating act before we invaded Irac and Afghanistan ? I don't buy it. There is no justification for what happened on 9-11. Thats like saying a bully wont bully you if you give them what they want and back down, they just bully you more.
Or is "occupation" meaning maybe we are suppose to leave so they can have our land? Really. Whats your piont?

If its not about religion, why avoid any sign of it at the 9-11 site (no prayer, no pastors, no cross) ? They can build a mosque near there, but no church or cross can be set up, no pastors at the remembrance? Seems to me they got what they wanted. I don't blame every Islam for 9-11 (even though their own "good book" tells them to destroy everyone they don't convert to their own religion), but you cant tell me this wasn't about religion. If anything, I think they hated the hippocrates and evil of this nation that once was Christian ruled and titled and so tried to justify with their own hippocratic evil, forgetting the log in their own eye while trying to remove a spec in ours. But maybe I give them too much credit.

I'm all for getting our people home to defend our own, or whats left of it. But our people were home on 9-11 so its really more than that isn't it? Our battle seems to as much within our boarders as outside of them. There is more to the story. I think you need to keep asking yourself more questions.

    • This is not only about 9/11. It's about wrong US foreign policy in the middle east starting 1949 and blindly supporting Israel. What happened on 9/11 it's a kinda drawback of that and let me make it clear: It will happen again if US foreign policy won't change. The question is WHEN and not IF.

  12. On likes and dislikes number count vs. views. Can come from facebook pages without actually coming to this page to read it.
    As for the comment:
"he needs to play the part of a president… image is everything to these dumb ass americans"

Unfortunately, he is playing the part, except all too well:
Humility, intelligence, honesty, honest promises with clearly defined strategies, economic sensibility, and global thoughfulness. I would say all of these define his candidacy and personality. I think any country that had a president whom acted in this manner, would/should be proud.

However, you are right our media derived sense is that we need a stupid pit bull in office. "Real" qualifications almost never come into play.

  19. For those of you who think the towers came down in a controlled demolition, I hope you have a degree in structural engineering and architecture, and understand the building trends of the early 1970's. Also, building codes of that era addressed fire differently than they do now, and no fire code for buildings would address the intense heat of an explosive fire fueled by aviation fuel. These buildings were actually engineered to collapse exactly like they did for a reason. Would you rather have seen them fall sideways and take out 6 or 7 city blocks? The "explosive ejections" were caused by air compression from above. It's basic physics and is evidence-based. What you have is speculation. I do agree that a more comprehensive, evidence-based commission should be performed, but I doubt that will ever happen.
