Grover Norquist, the influential conservative activist, recently made some very frank and sobering remarks about the U.S. military budget. Unlike many conservatives, Mr. Norquist understands that American national security interests are not served by the interventionist foreign policy mindset that has dominated both political parties in recent decades. He also understands that there is nothing “conservative” about incurring trillions of dollars in debt to engage in hopeless nation building exercises overseas.
Speaking at the Center for the National interest last week, Norquist stated that “We can afford to have an adequate national defense which keeps us free and safe and keeps everybody afraid to throw a punch at us, as long as we don’t make some of the decisions that previous administrations have, which is to over extend ourselves overseas and think we can run foreign governments.”
He continued: “Bush decided to be the mayor of Baghdad rather than the president of the United States. He decided to occupy Iraq and Afghanistan rather than reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. That had tremendous consequences… Richard Nixon said that America’s national defense needs are set in Moscow, meaning that we wouldn’t have to spend so much if they weren’t shooting at us. The guys who followed didn’t notice that the Soviet Union disappeared.”
When a prominent DC conservative like Grover Norquist makes such bold statements, it shows that public support for a truly conservative foreign policy is growing. The American people simply cannot stomach more wars and more debt, especially with our domestic economy in tatters.
The American people should reject the hype about so called defense “cuts” from both side of the political spectrum. When the Obama administration calls for an 18% increase in 2013 military spending, those who propose a 20% increase portray this as a reduction!
Even the supposedly draconian cuts called for in the “sequestration” budget bill would keep military spending at 2006 levels when adjusted for inflation, which is about as high in terms of GDP as during World War II. It’s also more than the top 13 foreign countries spend on defense combined. Furthermore, sequestration only cuts military spending for one year after taking effect. In future years Congress is free to reinstate higher military spending levels– so under sequestration the most drastic case would mean spending $5.2 trillion instead of $5.7 trillion over the next decade.
Is there any amount of money that would satisfy the Pentagon hawks? Even if we were to slash our military budget in half, America easily would remain the world’s dominant military power. Our problems don’t result from a lack of spending. They result from a lack of vision and a profound misunderstanding of the single biggest threat to every American man, woman, and child: the federal debt.

My point was, I think, that if you agree with Ron Paul then you can not be for isolationism. You do not have to be the life guard of the world to be an isolationist necessarily. Ron Paul does not want to shut the US away from the world, he just wants to stop the interventions in another nation’s business. He still wants to be friends with nations, and to be diplomatic as a means to preserving that.

America should lower its defense budget to $180 billion, that will still be twice the rate of the next biggest spender. The money saved could thus be used to invest in America’s domestic economy.

The reason Ron Paul didn’t get the nomination is that Israel actually owns the federal reserve and by printing the dollar they have bribed most of the delegates. They have also bought over 90% of cable channels such as FOX News, CNN and MSNBC which have tricked people into supporting either Obama or Romney (both men are owned by Israel) and into thinking Ron Paul’s ideas (like ending the federal reserve) are crazy. The USSR’s main export to the world was oil and natural gases, when Saudi Arabia stopped protecting the oil price the price fell, dramatically. With the nation’s lowered income the country couldn’t import the food supplies that were needed to the population. That’s why the union dissolved.
Reagan had nothing to do with it.

If America never stood up to the Soviet Union, it would never have collapse. That is a fact. It did have a very bad economic policy which helped lead to its collapse. But that is not what collapsed. It was the people and nations rallying behind Reagans leadership to oppose the USSR (which Ron Paul would consider interventionism)

You can’t do that, you can’t rewrite history. Soviet did not fall due to American intervention it’s collapse was due to an inability to find a solution to the Soviet economical problems that occurred when Saudi Arabia stopped protecting oil prices.

Yeah, I voted for Obama; but I haven’t seen any CHANGE! We are still in Afg. and it took him 3years to pull out of Iraq. The Palestinians had their land stolen (at the tip of bayonette). They then were subject to massive genocide and terror: at the hands of the jews. (They hardly had any weapons: they were under Ottoman rule for centuries.) So they ran for their lives. There was a UN meeting in S.Africa, Oct. 2001. They had planned it for a few years. the subject was to make a law against the disenfranchisement, deportation/relocation and discrimination of a people: because of their race, religion, or ethnicity. The primary authors of this were jews. Because of the many times they had been expelled and persecuted,etc.. The Saudi delegation stood up and whole-heartedly agreed with the idea. The proceeded to ask the UN to apply this law to the Palestinians.

Ha ha, S.A. was not even a “real” country at that time(or now). It’s a kingdom. I’ve read over 7000pages on the Afg. conflict, OBL, Muslim “hadiths”, and Arabic history AND I was in Afg., under OEF last year. As far as 1945??? was that a typo? And 9-11 occured ~2weeks after the Arab Delegation stood up for the Palestinians and was ignored!
