As I prepare to retire from Congress I’d like to suggest a few New Year’s resolutions for my colleagues to consider. For the sake of liberty, peace and prosperity I certainly hope more members of Congress consider the strict libertarian-constitutional approach to government in 2013.
In just a few days, Congress will solemnly swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. They should read Article 1 Section 8 and the Bill of Rights before taking such a serious oath. Most legislation violates key provisions of the Constitution in very basic ways, and if members can’t bring themselves to say “no” in the face of pressure from the special interests, they have broken trust with their constituents and violated their oath. Congress does not exist to serve the special interests. It exists to protect the rule of law.
I also urge my colleagues to end unconstitutional wars overseas. Stop the drone strikes. Stop the covert activities and the meddling in the internal affairs of other nations. Strive to observe good faith and justice towards all nations, as George Washington admonished. We are only making more enemies, wasting lives and bankrupting ourselves with the neoconservative interventionist mindset that endorses preemptive war that now dominates both parties.
All foreign aid should end, which is blatantly unconstitutional. While it may be a relatively small part of our federal budget, for many countries it is a large part of theirs and it creates perverse incentives for both our friends and enemies. There is no way members of Congress can know or understand the political, economic, legal and social realities in the many nations to which they send taxpayers’ dollars.
Congress needs to stop accumulating more debt. U.S. debt monetized by the Federal Reserve is the true threat to our national security. Revisiting the parameters of Article 1 Section 8 would be a good start.
Congress should resolve to respect personal liberty and free markets. Learn more about the free market and how it regulates commerce and produces greater prosperity ever than any legislation or regulation.
Understand that economic freedom is freedom. Resolve not to get in the way of voluntary contracts between consenting adults. Stop bailing out failed yet politically connected companies and industries. Stop forcing people to engage in commerce when they don’t want to, and stop prohibiting them from buying and selling when they want to. Stop trying to legislate your ideas of fairness. Protect property rights. Protect the individual. That is enough.
There are many more resolutions I would like to see my colleagues in Congress adopt, but respect for the Constitution and the oath of office should be at the core of every single member’s of Congress due in 2013.

I am sorry to see him go. I know he has earned a break such as a good retirement. I know he can retire with the knowledge of having the highest marks in his class, for every year I listened to the others there. I hope that is enough of a reward, because the business as usual crowd that run the government, and media, will never give him anything else.

David, do you realize how old Dr. Ron Paul is? He’s 77 years old. Most people retire by 65. He may be in great health for his age but that doesn’t me he doesn’t deserve a break. Working in politics is far more stressful than most jobs, especially if you’re one if few politicians that argue against special interests.

Don’t blame me when the collapse comes – I campaigned for Ron Paul and
helped put him on the Ballot as an official “write-in” candidate. But, just like
the lyrics in this song, in spite of our group’s diligent voluntary work to
campaign for Ron Paul earlier this year, they would not listen – a majority of
the Americans have allowed themselves to become too dumbed-down. It was a
choice, and those of us who wisely chose the right path will nevertheless go
down with all the ill-informed ones. But, we’re still the winners, because we
stepped forward and stood up for what we believed in; for us, it was not
acceptable to stick our heads in the sand when we were presented with the fine
and noble gentleman that is Ron Paul, as the unarguable solution to our
Country’s dilemmas. There was no doubt that this man had America’s – and all
America’s; best interest at heart and in mind. It was our DUTY as Americans
to support this man; and we stridently did so wholeheartedly. We did the right
thing for the right reason – our ethics, hearts, and minds are intact; just like
the moral character of Ron Paul. We adopted the message delivered within
Abraham Lincoln’s words, when he stated: “Just because we may fail in our
struggle to succeed, let it not deter us from supporting a cause that is just.”
We can proudly say: “Let it not be said that we did nothing.”
What we need is more time; but there’s no doubt that time has run out.

Bonus: The Bill of Rights
1st Amendment — We can say whatever we want and believe whatever we want, and the government has no say in it.
2nd Amendment — We have the right to defend ourselves from the government and criminals using firearms.
3rd Amendment — Soldiers and policemen can’t just bust into your house like they own the joint and crash there.
4th Amendment — Police can’t just search people randomly, go through their stuff, ask for their papers, and all that business.
5th Amendment — The government can’t just take stuff or lock people up without a trial.
6th Amendment — Trials have to be speedy and fair.
7th Amendment — People have a right to be judged by other folks who can understand them.
8th Amendment — Judges can’t just straight up rip people off or do cruel and unusual stuff to them.
9th Amendment — Just because it isn’t written down here, doesn’t mean people don’t have other rights.
10th Amendment — If the Constitution doesn’t say that the government can do something, it can’t do it. The people and the states have all the powers not otherwise given to the federal government.
