Education

710 Responses

Ron Paul works towards the elimination of the inefficient Department of Education, leaving education decisions to be made at the state, local or personal level. Parents should have the right to spend their money on the school or method of schooling they deem appropriate for their children.

On November 14, 2008 Ron Paul said in a New York Times interview:

“First, the Constitution does not authorize the Department of Education, and the founders never envisioned the federal government dictating those education policies.

Second, it is a huge bureaucracy that squanders our money. We send billions of dollars to Washington and get back less than we sent. The money would be much better off left in states and local communities rather than being squandered in Washington.

Finally, I think that the smallest level of government possible best performs education. Teachers, parents, and local community leaders should be making decisions about exactly how our children should be taught, not Washington bureaucrats.

The Department of Education has given us No Child Left Behind, massive unfunded mandates, indoctrination, and in some cases, forced medication of our children with psychotropic drugs. We should get rid of all of that and get those choices back in the hands of the people.”

The dept of education is a waste of money. Our education system is broke. Im 17 years old, in high school and I see colossal budget cuts, partially due to NCLB (which is supported by the bureaucracy). I agree with the destruction of The Department of Education.

My grandmother would grill my mother and uncle out of a speller every day AFTER school. Both of them excelled. If education decisions became localized parents would feel more empowered to affect the system instead of just throwing their hands up. Perhaps with fewer mandates fewer children would be homeschooled. Besides, as Ron Paul has said, Education was not authorized by the Constitution which is his litmus test. Things are so out of control perhaps it should be ours as well.

    Ron Paul for President !!!

i changed that with 12 years of school, year round. 6th grader can start college courses letting him have a bachelors degree in 12 years saving 4 trillion in wasted gov’t money. then parents and state decide money for masters. during this period there is a high school diploma a associates degree and a bachelor degree. what you earn is up to student but no federal money

Simplicity is what this country needs. Half, if not more, of Americans don’t even understand their own government. If you even understood what the Department of Education does you would understand it’s not needed. Each state has the power to run it’s own schools. Stop wasting money on smart boards and start paying for better teachers. Do you know what teachers do with their smart boards in high school? They create useless power point presentations for notes they could have written on a board if they weren’t too lazy to get up from behind their desks. Our education system has stopped being about education and has become about making money on the students test scores. It only took one semester to finish world history and what did I learn? The answers to my next quiz.. Ask your children what they learn in school and see if you still want a Department of Education.

    Sincerly,

I don’t have children, and I am 23 with a degree in education. I know what kids are learning and not learning in school and I understand the struggle firsthand from the perspectives of students and teachers. I understand what the department of education does and how vital it is. I’m not saying smart boards are the answer, and I take offense to your view of teachers being lazy. Clearly you don’t understand the laws and mandates forced upon teachers, which include integrating new technology like smart boards into their lessons. It’s not up to the teachers. I am not saying the department of education doesn’t need improvement or that our current system is working to the best of it’s abilities. I am saying that what we need is an some effective federal education policy based on content and quality instead of technology and tests. If you don’t like big federal government, feel free to move to a smaller country. This is the UNITED States of America and we need to have a cohesive plan for the education of American youth. Children in Mississippi should have the same educational opportunities as those growing up in Washington D.C. That kind of equality would be impossible without a department of education at the national level. To believe otherwise is arrogant and foolish.

I totally agree with you that we should end the ridiculous practice of ramming useless “technology” or so called aids into the classroom in an attempt to improve learning. What ever happened to homework, math books and paper and pencils?? How did you learn multiplication when you were in 2nd and 3rd grade?? You probably wrote out the multiplication table 50 times and worked hundreds of problems.

The Dept. of Ed. is a huge burden on teachers of today. My mom teaches music in a public school and is now required to give each student a grade everyday. That’s 250+ grades a day that she not only has to keep a hard copy of but she has to enter all the grades online. A colossal waste of time!! You have a lot of faith that the people creating the curriculum in DC. Central planning is a terrible idea and it never works because you eliminate competition for ideas. If something bad gets implemented on the federal level then everyone loses! Maybe you’re a brilliant person and you should make the plan for us and run the federal Dept. of Ed. and maybe your ideas would be wonderful and everyone would benefit and be happy. BUT!!! You cannot guarantee me that the person who comes after you would not change your wonderful system and implement some new doomed to fail system like we currently have!! That’s the danger and the principal at stake here!

Finally, simply moving to a smaller country doesn’t mean that the government is smaller and any less invasive!! Technically you’re right though. It would be a safe to assume than a smaller country would most likely have fewer citizens than the USA and that there would be fewer members in their government compared to the US. You are also right about another thing….. This is the UNITED States of America, a republic held together by a federal government with “Limited Powers”. That’s the framework that was created when this country was formed and the entire reason we have states with their own governments. For someone with an education degree who is going to be teaching, you don’t know much about American history and government.

By the way, I have two sisters who are teachers as well one 4th grade (3 years) at a private school, the other 12 grade english (10 years) in a public school. My mom has taught in a inner city public school for 30 years so I’m not speaking as an outsider and they all would argue that federal gov’t control and even many state mandates are bad for schools. They would also say that there are many lazy teachers!!!

I’m sorry but what world are you living in again? Please, show me where there is ANY EQUALITY or any kind of COHESIVE planning at all when it comes to education in this nation. Sadly, if you want any kind of decent education in this country anymore it usually comes from a private school with a hefty price tag starting at kindergarten.

Frankly, I really don’t know what America you are living in but the one I have been living in for going on 30 years now has an education system that is a complete joke run by a so called Dept. of Education that seems to be headed by clowns where Americas children end up being the punchline. To believe otherwise is foolish and delusional.

@NickoleLongbrook This technology is not coming from the Federal Department of Education. It is coming from State DOE. What Ron Paul wants to do is to put the power of education completely into the hands of these state departments that are flooding the schools with technology. I live in Idaho. Currently, our State Superintendent of Schools, Tom Luna, is pushing online learning. School districts are losing money for every hour that students are taking an online class. It isn’t the federal government pushing these useless technologies such as MIMIO Smart Boards. It is the state governments. They are slowly pushing us towards private schools. If the FDOE is destroyed, there will be nothing stopping Idaho, as well as many other states, from going in this direction. State governments are sabotaging teachers.

This is disgusting. Anyone growing up in public schools in any of the states that rank low in education knows how harmful Ron Paul’s policies could be. You don’t like NCLB? Great! Get rid of it and spend some time in a classroom before you start making more laws about what they should be teaching and the standards the students should and can meet. The problem isn’t the existence of the Department of Education, the problem is politicians making laws about an education system that they haven’t been a part of in decades. Saying that elimination of the Department of Education is the solution to ineffective education policy is like saying elimination of the Department of Defense is the solution to ineffective wars. It’s terrifying to me that a presidential candidate would simplify our nation’s education problems to this extent. If you have any sense at all, don’t vote for Ron Paul.

This puts the money back into the hands of the tax payers… aka… you and local government and does not pay al. What you are asking for is big government to watch over you in good fiath. Do you honestly believe that will happen knowing the past as you do? It is getting away from Federal control over education. Constitutuionally, this was up to the states. Modern governance has corrupted this yet was the basis of education up until the early part of the 1900′s via The New Deal and the like. Don’t kill the messenger.

to all, there is an easy solution. 12 yrs. all year round 3 day weekends. at 6th grade you can pick your career and start collge courses, math and english a must. smart people take spanish also as in 10 years you’ll be required to know it. this plan gives kids bachelor degrees at 12 years no big money on colleges.this means more homework toget high school diploma in 8th grade with college classes instead of study hall. and teachers will work longer hrs just like regular people. state and local pay.

Who, at 11 years old, knows what career they want to have? How can you justify who the “smart” people are, and why are they the only ones who need to learn another language? And why only spanish? Perhaps a child wants to learn German, or French, or Italian. Study hall is essential if teachers are doing their jobs. Any teacher would be happy to tell you just how long and how hard they work.

This is the thing I find scary about him and Other Politicians . No serious consideration has been put in to education. I know it should be the responsibly of the State and Local levels to maintain. Yet many of the Federal level politicians have paragraph on how to handle the the current situation. The Education problem needs to be addressed on many levels. The Federal Level would rather spend money on bombing other countries then Supporting schools. Also while I believe the State levels should dictate the Standards for their Counties and Cities. The Federal level should make states accountable for the standards. I also fear less support for Public education would allow even more Urban Youth to drop out. So we have to have more then just a page on education reform. Every Level of government needs to sit down and seriously, think about this.
