Ron Paul opposes the War on Drugs.
On November 20, 2008 Ron Paul said in a New York Times / Freakonomics interview:
“[...] the federal war on drugs has proven costly and ineffective, while creating terrible violent crime. But if you question policy, you are accused of being pro-drug. That is preposterous. As a physician, father, and grandfather, I abhor drugs. I just know that there is a better way — through local laws, communities, churches, and families — to combat the very serious problem of drug abuse than a massive federal-government bureaucracy.”

I don’t think the Gov. should be in our lives period. that’s not what their in office for,and we have sit back and let them put shit in our water,our food, and take prayer and the pledge of elegance out of our schools… I mean the pledge of elegance for gods sake, and teach our kids a false history and a hundred other things that we all know they’ve slipped by us and made these petty laws,But its what I want to know is, we all know that in a REAL election Ron Paul would win by the biggest margin ever in the history of the U.S. Every where I look people are going crazy over Dr. Paul and for good reason, he wants to put the federal reserve (out of business) and the government(out of our business) in their place. So every where I look the other candidates ( even obama) don’t have a lot of supporters like Ron Paul does. I mean even the military has donated more to Ron Paul’s campaign than all the others COMBINED!! So what I want to know is if you guys are prepared to stand behind this great man? Because in a honest race the other guys don’t have a chance in Hell of beating Ron Paul…But , they WILL WIN , Because they have all the power to cheat us out of what ever they decide to cheat us out of, and if we don’t stand up to these psychos and do it now while we have a great man in front of us …. Well we are going to lose this WAR and I’M afraid we will all look back at this missed opportunity to have kicked their Ass’s out of the tight choke hold they have not just on us Americans but the whole world. We MUST stick together and put ALL our difference’s aside to fight for this great change. Thank You All.

I would just like to say that weed is a very good thing, I’m 18 and love weed to the max. The only thing I dont understand is why it’s not legal yet. It is probably the most helpful plant on this earth and people think it’s the devil. Just like people eat a salad to lose weight, I smoke weed to ensure I don’t get Gloucoma. It needs to be legal and that’s a fact. I would release my last name, but where I live it’s not legal I’m not trying to go to jail over a gram of marijana. I’ve set my mind on legalizing weed since I was 15 and relized how good it is for you and how F**ked up the govenment is. totally agree man. Im 19, work a full time job, am smarter than 90% of this population and weed has never hurt my work ethic, my morals, or my right-or-wrong mentality. The reason weed is illegal is because its so much easier for people to say its WRONG, then explain WHY??????????????? Because there actually isn’t anything WRONG with it, it’s wrong to them. For no reason. Everyone has smoked pot before and what happened to them? NOTHING. This is again what Ron paul is saying. Enough is enough!! Who is the government to tell me what I can and can’t do. I think Ron Paul’s choices on this matter are great. The government currently spends way to much money on fighting the war on drugs, when there are other things we should be worried about such as our debt to China, gas prices, so on and so forth. I am not saying being a crackhead is a good lifestyle choice, but that is up to the individual, that is what is called freedom. Be it an alcoholic, a pot head, or a meth addict, that is a choice that that person chose, not for others to dictate. And plus if you look at other countries other then the United States, and look at their drug laws, almost all of them have more leniant drug laws and yet there is less drug abuse. And the logic behind it is simple. When people are told not to do something, especially kids, they tend to do it anyway. Look at Germany. The legal drinking age is 16 I believe. When I was in high school a group of German student came to our school for a month and none of them got why we drank so much. I am 18 right now and would just like to point out a truth. To the person who wrote about how bad marijuana is and wouldn’t associate themselves with druggies, the cannabis plant used to be found in grocery stores, was required to be grown by farmers, and used to be smoked by many of the early presidents. Abraham Lincoln admitted in a letter written during his presidency that one of his “favorite things” was “sitting on [his] front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp” (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_politicians_who_admit_to_cannabis_use). I guess you don’t like old Abe then do you? It wasn’t until one person who had a little power didn’t like it decided to change marijuana’s name into a bad one. I am not condoning its use, but I just don’t like hearing people complaining about others choices in life. Some people don’t like hunting, greed, fast cars, etc, but that doesn’t mean you should stop others from liking those things. Isn’t this the land of the free? well it used to be, and could be if you Vote Ron Paul!

I am disheartened that this conversation is centered on legaling drugs. Drug users are the last group I wish to associate with…having been one at one time. My interest in Ron Paul’s candidacy has nothing–absolutely NOTHING–to do with legalizing drugs, and everything to do with a desire for smaller, constitutionally defined government and the protection of innocent life from conception. IMHO, marijuana may have some medicinal value, but otherwise is nothing more than an IDIOT drug (for those of you who don’t get it, that means it makes you an ever-increasing idiot over time). And yes, for many, not all, is a gateway drug for even more destructive idiot drugs. It isn’t so much the choice of which drug becomes the gateway drug, but that the individual has a value system and morality that is already in the ditch or that they are willing to compromise and/or a biology that is pre-disposed to addiction. Alcohol can easily serve the same gateway function, as can prescription drugs or whatever. But illicit drugs are pretty much designated such for good reason, and such drugs that are used for anything other than carefully prescribed reasons are going to wind up being destructive on some level. Period. I hate drugs, and if that is what Ron Paul is all about–which I don’t think he is–that is a real unfortunate thing for his candidacy and everthing else he stands for. What a misfortune that he must endure the blight of all you junkies hanging on who rob him of real credibility and actually steering this country in a way it needs to go. Drugs are anti-marriage, anti-family, anti-God, and anti-country. And that is my opionion…

Well if you hate drugs that are taken only for pleasure and that can be destructive, then to be ideologically consistent you have to be prepared to outlaw alcohol as well. You say that marijuana makes you an idiot over time, ignoring the fact that the vast majority of scientific studies and inquiries have concluded that marijuana has no long term effect on brain, does not cause cancer and is in fact much safer than alcohol. how many people have gone home after a night out drinking and beaten their wives and children. If we can only have one recreational drug surely it should be the one that pushes people towards peace. You seem to have taken drugs and decided through your experiences that you don’t like them, but that should not be forced on me if what I’m doing does not interfere with anyone else’s standard of living. The imposition of puritanism on the very personal decision of what you do to your own body when you are an adult is totalitarian. Im not saying that drugs are good, and that everyone should take them. But surely if drugs are, as you define them, self-destructive, then we should treat those with problems as patients. We don’t throw people in jail for having a drink now. We treat adults like adults and try to offer treatment for those who have problems. We now have some measure of control in the system, saying what can be sold and to who. It is irresponsible and ridiculous to hand this responsibility to drug dealers and call ourselves moral because we nip at their heels every once in a while. What was the most crippling blow to Mafia, one from which they never recovered? The legalisation and regulation of alcohol. Every drug should be regulated, some more strictly than others. Make sure that the few places in a city that sell hard drugs (in very small quantities for personal use) are constantly under surveillance to make sure they comply with regulation. Then you take the billions of dollars we are spending fighting this senseless war and you put it to use educating our children about the real dangers of drugs and treating the chronically addicted. thats how you solve the drug problem, and ron paul is certainly sending us in the right direction.

Honestly, I don’t care is marijuana is legalized or not. I’m smoking it either way, just like I always have been. I’m much more concerned about all the time and money we spend on putting “addicts” and “dealers” in prison. It’s a lose/lose situation. We’re paying taxes on people who are going to sit their asses in prison for decades, and then get out and keep on doing what they know how to do. Out of all the people I’ve known who have been charged with possession and such, it’s a rare day when they’ve quit being involved with drugs just because of jail or prison. Sitting in prison is NOT treating anything.
Also, in my opinion, drug use is a life choice. You want to smoke crack all day? That’s fine, just don’t bother me. Same with meth. I live in Idaho and our state has a Meth Project. It’s been going for quite a few years now, and all I an say is what an enormous amount of fuckery it is. I know several tweakers, none of them have holes in their faces or randomly jump into peoples house for money. They’re normal people. They have children and jobs. They aren’t hurting anyone. And sure, crazy meth heads do exist, but they’re much more rare than people are told. People are people. We’re always going to be different and there’s always going to be some of us who are less than desirable, drugs or not.
America, stop striving so hard for perfection and come to terms with your people. Not everyone wants to live the “American Dream”. We just want to live our lives and smoke our dope. I’ve never hurt anyone, my friends and family have nevwr hurt people, either. So, take your War on Drugs budget and use it for something that actually matters, such as all the little boys starting to join gangs and starting to call themselves “G”s. That’s where all the alleged drug problems are coming from.

May be Ron Paul is right, let’s give a chance to freedom and liberty, but do not be cowards when doing so! If you have ever raised children, you should have experienced the benefits of freedom and teaching self-reliance as a method, rather than punishment, moral rigidity and control. Im unlucky that I live here in indiana. Its not even a medical state (yet) but we are working on it. We need your help ron. For some reason people think cannabis is a bad thing. I cannot see a single thing wrong with cannabis. The use of hemp could provide our nation with lots of oil and paper, medicine, and food. I’m from Indiana too, and I totally agree. Although I don’t partake often, I do on occasion use cannabis, mainly for stress relief and for a change of pace every once in a while, as one would do with a beer or two after a hard day.
Spice is probably one of the worst things I’ve seen before, although I’m only 20, and some friends of mine have found themselves with addictions that they didn’t know they were getting from it because of its unresearched side effects. Marijuana on the other hand has been used for centuries and is well known in what can happen. I feel like if we do lessen or eliminate drug consumption laws and instead educate our people, they will have the knowlege to make the decision on their own. Just as I take ibuprofen for body aches by my own free will, I would prefer a more suitable way of doing so through the herbal method.

I think that we should legalize marijuana and have hookah bars like in Holland. Marijuana is not physically dangerous anyway; alcohol is much more dangerous. Even a cigarette is more dangerous. Stop putting people in jail for getting “high”; it’s just a waste of taxpayers dollars. Marijuana is medicine for some people including those with HIV/AIDS; cancer; glaucoma; and arthritis. It should be legal for medical purposes nationally. Please vote for Ron Paul. He’ll turn this country around and reduce crime.

As a former “hard” drug user, and an avid marijuana enthusiast, I can tell you that decriminalizing illicit drugs is a fantastic idea. Meth users steal to “cluck” the stolen items for dope. Same with heroin users. Police forces nationwide spend millions of dollars on locking up addicts, instead of pursuing child predators, corrupt financiers, and other more noteworthy causes in crime prevention. Also, with the influx of Mexican drugs, and the violence and instability that goes with it, it’s absurd to suggest that continuing the “war on drugs” is in any positive, or successful. Jails are overcrowded, and TRUE criminals (rapists, violent offenders, etc.), are released on 10% time, where a convicted drug offender is sentenced to mandatory sentences. Trust me, I spent 15 years of my life in less than reputable circles, and I can tell you honestly, most are brilliant people, with decent intentions…just unfortunately addicted to a substance that’s so criminalized, there really is no option for recovery…unless of course you have $10,000 for rehab. Support drug awareness! Fight against police gestapo tactics and a justice system that offers NO recovery for users…just a cesspool to meet other criminals and become assimilated to “prison politics”. True story: I was walking down the sidewalk from the liquor store a block from my home in Torrance, CA, @ 3:30PM on a Wednesday, when I was stopped by a Torrance PD cruiser, lights on, and accosted. “What are you doing?”, the officer asked me. I replied I was coming home, which I pointed out (since I was 3 doors down), and he then pulled into my driveway, handcuffed me and searched me in front of neighbors. THAT is what happens when you tell police to make quotas, instead of actually PREVENTING CRIME.

I’m for the legalization of all drugs, but anyone who thinks we should tax and regulate weed doesn’t know what they’re talking about, no offense. The government, especially at the federal level, will never be able to tax a plant you can grow in your bathtub, closet, backyard etc.
Also, I think we should be spending our money on real drug treatment, and real drug education. Not the BS they feed us in school, which is mostly over exaggerated facts, propaganda, and straight up lies.
As for treatment, we need to stop giving addicts drugs that only “ween” them off their addiction, such as methadone, sub oxone, etc. For those of you who have never heard of Ibogaine hydrochloride, look it up. It’s a natural drug that has the power to cure just about any drug addiction after one dose, with no withdrawal symptoms or cravings.
It’s illegal here in the US, because pharmaceutical companies dont want to patent it, because they make more money selling rehab centers drugs like methadone. 1 out of 5 people who use heroin will eventually become addicted, and 9 out of 10 heroin addicts will never recover from their addiction.
Big Pharma companies know this, and they know that addicts looking to get clean will keep coming back and back and back again for the ineffective and useless drugs rehab centers feed them that these pharm companies produce.
Full legalization of drugs will also cripple organized crime groups, such as the cartels, and street gangs. Most of their money comes from drugs, and most of the violence and killing is because of drug money. These organizations will never cease to exist because of legalization, because there is alot more to gangs than drug dealing. However, the violence caused by these people will drop drastically, which leads me to my next point.
Drugs are a ton more expensive on the black market than they would be in a legal, free market. Think about it. You can buy a bottle of OxyContin from a pharmacy for $10. In some places when sold illegally, OxyContin pills, depending on the strength, can go for $80 or more a pill, usually a dollar a mg.
Because drugs would be so much cheaper if sold legally, it would cripple criminal networks, as stated above, as well as decrease property crimes, because most addicts have to resort to burglary, robbery, theft, etc, to supply their habit.
On top of that, we as tax payers would be alot better off, because we would no longer be paying for a pointless and oppressive war, and, we would no longer be paying as much for the prison industrial complex. Hundreds of thousands of prisoners would be released, and we would no longer be paying for their food, education, whatever.

While I agree with you on legalization, I disagree that the government could not tax cannabis like alcohol and tobacco. I suppose a lot of people could grow tobacco in their backyard and many people make their own wines and beers all the time, especially where I’m from in NH. Legalization would probably create a competative market for drugs (including cannabis) and companies would offer high quality product just like alcohol. Sure, some people would grow their own, but I firmly believe a lot of people would simply buy it. Besides, sale and cultivation could be controlled as well.

Get rid of methadone and Suboxone? Seriously? Addiction is a disease, and a chemical in-balance. Just like depressed people with low serotonin take SSRI’s the correct the in-balance, people that are opiate dependent can benefit greatly from taking a drug like Suboxone that also corrects the in-balance that causes cravings and withdrawal.
Ibogaine does show promise for treating addiction, but will not work for everyone. I agree that it too should be legalized, but I don’t think it could replace ORT (opiate replacement therapy). I also think you’re statistics are a little off and misleading; I know many people that have successfully recovered from heroin addiction and went on to lead productive lives, many with the help of Suboxone.

Ok, first of all yes it would be very easily taxed and regulated. Why would you assume the fact that you can grow it means everyone and their mother would be growing it? You can ferment alcohol in your bathtub too but more people buy it at a store for its convenience. People are lazy and would rather buy it at a store in 20 seconds then spend months growing it. So next time do some research before you go running your mouth. Because you apparently don’t have a clue what your talking about! So why couldn’t they tax it? what would be stopping them. they tax tobacco and alcohol perfectly fine what is it about weed that makes you think its “untaxable?”

The war on drugs is the longest lasting, and least productive war in American history. Furthermore, it is impossible to win. Over 40 years of simple statistics will confirm this. If you think that the feds are winning, then just open your eyes… drugs are cheaper then ever, easier to get, and more potent as time goes by, yet the war still wages on. We withdrew from Vietnam because it was a waste of time, money and life. Many Americans feel the same way about the war on terror and nearly every candidate wants to end it. Yet Ron Paul is the only candidate with enough common sense to grasp these simple facts. Educate, not legislate. I supported Ron Paul in the previous election and I support him now. I am thrilled that he has gotten the notoriety and momentum that he has and even if he does not win this time, he has started a revolution that will not die with him. Wake up America.

Do you have any empirical evidence to support an increased use of drugs after lessening drug laws (decriminalization is the closest you will find). Well, you have none, but the evidence points quite to the contrary. Making drug possession an infraction opens users to treatment, lessens robbery and property crime, reduces overdose and disease rates, lessens the number of addicts and results in less drug use in general (as shown in Portugal). Shifting the pressure from users to dealers/importers is much more effective at stopping drug use, and morally it is much more acceptable, allowing those with the serious medical condition of addiction to recover and allowing those who want to recreationally use a substance use in peace; remember drugs would still be MUCH harder to get in the first place.

I’m not completely sold on legalizing drugs myself, however… you don’t think your kids walk past meth heads and crack heads on every corner now?? In addition, don’t you think the Police Officers who go out into our communities and put their lives and livelihoods on the line for you and your family every single day don’t deserve pay that reflects the risks that they take??? Not only that, crime rates dropped after Prohibition was repealed and our police officers were safer and were more able to focus on other crimes… like the crack heads who were trying to kidnap children on their way to school…

Crack was not even thought of around the Prohibition Era. It appeared in the 1980′s. Saying that crime dropped when Prohibition was reapealed, is saying that legalizattion of the drug, alcohol reduced crime. Police officers do deserve the pay that they get. It is a very difficult, dangerous, and stressful job. I believe that people either do what they want or do things because it is ‘taboo’ to do so. The fun runs out for these people that are addicted and it becomes a necessity to get high because mental withdrawal (cocaine has no physical withdrawl symptoms), physical withdrawal, or a combination of both come into play. My late uncle was one who dealt marijuana and had said that he hoped it would never be legalized. I don’t do drugs or drink, although I did my share of the latter. I think the drugs used by people addicted should not be criminal for them. The crimes that may be committed, while under the influence, still would be criminal…just like any alcohol related crime. Bear in mind, that alcohol is legal, but drunk driving, domestic abuse, indecent exposure, or anything else while under the influence is still illegal, but it happens. The way I look at it, they have all been illegal and the laws have been enforced, with little result. It’s about time to give the other option a try. This wasn’t all directed towards you, Nikki. I just kind of got into talking about the subject.

I love how people discourage the use of drugs because apparently someone came up with the idea marijuana is a gateway drug when in fact so is alcohol. If you drink a beer for the first time you get a nice buzz but soon it takes more beer to get the same effect then you move on to liqour and you got people driving drunk killing thousands of people a year. Rape is on the rise sexual assault and etc… but where do you hear about someone smoking weed raping or killing someone because they were high? As long as we are involved in wars that cant be won-such as the war on drugs-we are not only wasting our time but our money as well. The only way to end drug use is through treatment through channels Ron Paul mentioned above- churches, communities, and families. The war on drugs is supported by bedmates that profit from war such as artillery suppliers,etc. War is very big business, and as long as we allow this war to go on, we are filling the pockets of people that are simply in it for the money. Do you actually think they care about a loved one that either you or myself might have that is using drugs?

I’m considering my support for Ron Paul, I’d just like to see legalized cannabis.
It’s a plant that’ll grow damn near anywhere. There’s nothing harmful about it at all if you’re making things out of it (like rope, paper, brownies, ect). Maybe we shouldn’t think about if they taxed it or sold it commercially or put age restrictions on it. It’ll save everyone money. Never again will you have to call some stranger who may rob you, or kill you. You wouldn’t even have to go up to the store to purchase any.. Just go out to the back yard, pluck the prettiest bud you see and commence. God damn it. It’s a fucking plant.
See, you have to understand why some drugs are illegal. I believe there was a law enforcement official who posted below about drugs that are a real problem. Go read that. It makes perfect sense. Meth Labs blow up. Heroin… Go watch Requiem for a Dream. Coke, Crack, and other things including opiates are highly addictive and expensive while also causing harm to your body.
The psychedelic drugs such as LSD, psilocibin/psilocin, mescaline, and Dimethyltriptamine do not have very high (Or any) levels of toxicity at all. Nor do they pose a chance of addiction. These sorts of drugs are illegal just to be illegal. I, myself, would never push to make them legal (Besides psilocibin or mescaline for tribal ritualistic means.. I mean.. they’re just plants too) and this is because they are completely unnecessary. And I suppose you could say that about cannabis as well, but I can’t drink. Haha. It’s that thing. Alcohol can kill you. Prohibition can kill you. Maryjane hasn’t taken a single life.
Pro-pot. Maybe pro Ron Paul.

Why does the government continue to waste time and money trying to arrest and catch the ones involved in marijuana when my state is one of the WORST for meth labs! Meth labs can blow up and that is a hundred times worse than growing a plant! It is being done in vehicles and in homes that also house children! But yet marijuana is the worst thing according to our government! Marijuana does not cause hallucinations like bath salts, heroin, cocaine, meth, and pills! No wonder our government is in the hole with nothing to show for it….its because they are wasting time and money on petty things! I honestly believe that our country should not stick their heads where they dont belong too! Instead of jumping in to every dispute that happens over seas and protecting other countries for free for that country but on our dime. Charge those countries for our services to them! Then maybe we wouldn’t be so far in the whole from the efforts and costs of our military expenses! I am a normal citizen that pays taxes and abides by the laws and I am a hardworking mother and going to school for two associates degrees fulltime while working fulltime and I have more common sense than the government that is in place and can understand this stuff and know how to improve things so why dont they get it?! Why?! Because they are being bought off by lobbyists, companies, and the like with their own personal agendas that doesn’t want to see politicians take money away from them and spread the wealth out across the board to us normal citizens…..its crap and it needs to stop we need to have someone in the top office whose first concern is the citizens of the US and what is best for them! Ron Paul is that man! (P.S. Kudos to his son for standing up for us against the TSA!)

Being half Dutch/American, I have lived in both the US and The Netherlands – famous for their free drugs mentality. Despite the American ‘war on drugs’, Americans use more drugs than Dutchmen. Yet I think that about 90% of the Dutchmen strongly support the free drugs laws. Not because they are hippies, but because they don’t want a government telling them what to do. That fundamental right is directed by an idea that every human being may decide about the matters of its own health. I am thrilled to hear that Ron Paul supports this same idea – and I don’t even take alcohol, let alone drugs.

I’m all for legalizing marijuana. The war on drugs is just another phrase for war on the people. The pharmaceutical companies give us their drugs to use and the crap poisons our minds and bodies, you have to take a drug to fix or slow down a process and something else messes up. They make millions of dollars off of giving us more diseases than curing them. Give people jobs that can support them and their families and stop filling our jails with petty marijuana drug dealers. Lock up the sex offenders, the sickos that murder innocent people. Stop wasting tax dollars on garbage like that. Give better rehab to the people that is strung out on the cocaine, heroin, etc., I know people that keeps going in and out of rehab like it was their second home. What gives? “Marijuana is dangerous” what about the cigarettes and alcohol? Cigarettes only kill cause of the chemicals that are allowed in the tobacco, pure tobacco doesn’t harm. Alcohol, kills everyday and both are legal. (go figure) Well that is our law makers for us. Government has double standards all around. I believe the so called war on drugs is just a crock, how do you think the drugs get in the US? It is all a set up plan to put certain people behind bars.

At the time, it was in the news that marijuana wasn’t worse than alcohol, but the excuse was that authorities had no easy field test to determine whether someone was under the influence (such as with alcohol). Apparently someone can test positive well after the influence is gone.

I think that the government has failed us about the truth about marijuana. In fact, alcohol is more dangerous and even a cigarette is more dangerous than marijuana. I think it’s about time to stop putting people in jail for getting “high” or smoking marijuana. In Holland, where marijuana is legal there is less crime. The government deliberately lied about marijuana to scare people. Marijuana is medicine for some people with (e.g. cancer, HIV, arthritis,etc.). Why not just tax the drug and put an age limit on it. Total decriminalization of the drug might actually help this country!

Ya know I was a HUGE supporter for the “War on Drugs” especially since at one time I was quite addicted to many of them. However now after doing my due diligence I must agree that there is a better way. I would say the biggest turning point was after reading “In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts” by Dr. Gabor Mate. I think the good Dr makes GREAT points on why the system just doesn’t work and gives some great insight as to how it can be changed. I would love to hear more about how Ron Paul plans on getting out of the “War on Drugs” because in my opinion this particular war has cost America more money, time, and heartache than all the rest combined!

Well put, I appreciate and respect your own truthfull perspective..,All to often many of the solutions to our issues reflect ignorance and/or selfish intrest; which means we don’t fully understand the problem to begin with.
I have listened to several interviews and lectures were Dr. Gabor has gone into great detail the truth that encompasses the issues of both our failed drug policies and the slanted views of drug use.
Two other great minds on this same issue are Dr.Abdrew Wiel (sp?) and Judge James P. Grey. Both of them speak from years of practice and experience in their respected fields.

The “war” on drugs has cost us billions by putting non-violent offenders in the prison system. Better to use that money for rehab, which the offrender could also help pay for depending on financial situations. Putting non-violent users in prison just creates more hardened criminals when they get out.

Guest123456789 you could not be more wrong. Marijuana arrests account for HALF of all drug arrests. Heroin, Meth, Coke, Ecstasy, and other drugs COMBINED account for the rest. No state has fully legalized Marijuana, and only a few are thinking about it. Even Medical Marijuana is Federally Prohibited, and that leads to the DEA breaking down doors of state-law abiding patients, caregivers, and dispensaries in military style raids. Over half a million people have been arrested each year for Marijuana since 1995, that number hit 858,408 in 2009. Of these arrests(in 2009) 88% were for simple possession. Apparently, law enforcement does have a problem with it, and it is the one drug you ARE trying to crack down on. Numbers don’t lie, but cops sure do. FYI people also use Marijuana to cope with medical conditions like cancer, migraines, stomach problems, Multiple Sclerosis,AIDS, arthritis, depression, epilepsy, and countless other conditions. To most users, Cannabis is simply a cure for the pains of life and the War on Drugs is making criminals out of these people. The federal government should have no say over how you medicate your pain, as long as you are not hurting anyone else.
You are right about these drugs taking over the lives of our youth, you just don’t know how. Millions of children in this country are on amphetamines/stimulants(meth/coke), antidepressants(which artificially raise serotonin levels, creating, not fixing a chemical imbalance in the brain), and opiates(Heroin). However many children are being PRESCRIBED these drugs by doctors. These pills are not just handed out to kids who need them either. They are shoveled out onto the public, given to anyone who will buy. There is no infringement from law enforcement in this “black market”. and no its not a conspiracy, its the dang truth. if you can’t see it open your eyes.

The word “drug” does not begin and end with Marijuana! Yes, California and many other states have already or are thinking about legalizing marijuana. I am a law enforcement officer. Marijuana is the least of our nation’s concern and problem when speaking of drugs.
Heroin, Meth, Cocaine, Ecstasy, and other drugs of those nature are the problem. These are deadly drugs. These drugs are taking over the lives of our youth. These drugs are causing our nation to become filled with mindless junkies who do not contribute to society. Most posts here talk about Marijuana as if that is the one drug everyone wants to crack down on. Get over yourself and your need to have a plant to calm you down. If pot is all you experiment with, get off your anti-governemnt soap box. We don’t care about your concerns for legalized marijuana. Whether it is legal or not, you will always find something to argue about.
Pay attention to the real issues at hand, the issues that are causing our nation to errode with poor decisions, terrible policy, and corrupt, power hungry, greedy leaders. The War on Drugs is a necessity. If Ron Paul is too naive to believe that the people in the community can fight it, then he is a poor choice for the position.

Well you are entitled to your opinion.
And I agree…Thirty+ years of our faild zero tollerance drug policy is a waste of time and tax dollars.
Marijuana [as well as cocaine and heroin) should not be an issue. Pot should be legalized(medical & recreational use), and coke and heroin decriminalized up to 1 gram.
I personally would rather see my tax dollars go towards more important issues such as improving our Education system, creating a Single Payer Health Care system, Solar & Wind Energy, and advancements in bio fuels and high speed rail system.
How? First we need to get our militaries ass out of Iraq and Afganastan; as well as reduce our Governments foot print around the world…Stop meddleing in the political afairs of other governments. Stop giving Isreal money and stop borrowing from China.
Next reduce our defence spending by 1/3 and start shutting down 1/3 of the 700+ military bases in other countries.Now don’t have aheart attack over all of these ideas for solutions…But don’t you agree it’s time we wake-up and learn from our past; our mistakes, our succeses’,rather than continue down the “war on…” path. We, you, me, society in general, have beat ourselves to death over these silly wars…Not one single war since WWII has been just or necessary. Its as if we let that one victory – be it an important victory over facism – go to our heads…infate our “American egos” to the point of missing the BIG picture.
The last thing we need, anyone for that matter, are more draconin laws, a larger military and a paramilitary police force.
The question WE ALL need to ask ourselves is: Do we want Freedom (life, liberty,and the pursuit of happines), or do we want more security (a police state).
Obedience to Government is the sign of a Totaltarian State.

Send the addicts to rehab, not prison. Have some Law Enforcement Against Prohibition people speak in your community. Prohibition of alcohol didn’t work, just increased crime. Same with other drugs!

The war on drugs is over, we lost. California already threw in the towel. If it is regulated, then it can be controlled. If the stuff is taxed, then the different “products” can be age restricted, controlled. Jobs/employers can still keep those idiots from working for them via drug screenings. People will always come up with something stupid to get high off of, fastrer than lawmakers can deem it to be illegal. At least, if the junk was legal, the drug-heads would be less motivated to get around the system that doesn’t work very well anyhow. Having stuff available for leagal sale would keep the worst stuff out of the system, at a low price that the murderous drug czars can’t compete. Having lower prices that are manageable would reduce the need for drug-heads to mug, rob and kill, just to get a fix.

I am chemically dependent due to Parkinson’s Disease. Pot helps me better than my meds. Government does NOT care, and would happily toss my butt in jail, even though I never committed a violent crime. Yet if government gets caught committing crimes they are rewarded with million$.
