After giving his speech at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, Ron Paul met with a group of journalists to answer a few questions.

Ron Paul: No questions?
Question: Well, I’ll start. Representative Paul, I’m Ed Morrissey from Hot Air. And you’re here at the SRLC, it’s a leadership conference. Did you feel the need to deliver a message to Republican Party leadership? I heard a little bit of your speech. Are you concerned about the direction that the leadership is going in right now?
Ron Paul: Well, if you ask about delivering a message to the leadership, yes, I delivered the same message to everybody who listens. And I’ve been doing the same message for 35 years. So yes, the point I make was that the Republicans have lost credibility because they speak a good game but they don’t act very well. 1980 occurred, and there wasn’t much change, 1994 happened, nothing changed. Year 2000 happened, nothing really changed. And yet we’re the party of limited government and individual freedom. So I would say that my message was that we should practice what we preach. And right now it’s absolutely necessary, because people are so disgusted they’re leaving both parties. They’re getting out and they’re on their own and they’re upset and the country is bankrupt. So, to me, there is a fertile field out there for a message that I believe is deeply needed.

Jon Scott: No one has ever accused Texas Congressman Ron Paul of keeping quiet when it comes to issues that he cares about deeply. This weekend, the former 2008 presidential candidate earned cheers as well as boos at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, with unvarnished criticism of the president, the healthcare reform bill, and even some leaders within his own party. Some consider him a long shot in the 2012 presidential race. Congressman Paul, though, came within 1 vote of winning the event’s straw poll, coming in second right behind Mitt Romney.
Ron Paul joins us live from Texas right now via Skype. What does your second place finish in the SRLC straw poll say?
Ron Paul: Well, I think it means the Constitution is still alive, and hopefully well. I mean, people are wanting to hear what it would be like if we followed the Constitution in a very strict manner. So it’s very pleasing to me that we had a significant showing.

Kiran Chetry: Republicans are now looking ahead and eyeing a major political comeback. They rallied their troops at a leadership conference that took place this weekend in New Orleans, where a straw poll gave us an early indication of potential GOP candidates in 2012.
John Roberts: Mitt Romney topped Ron Paul in the ballot by just one vote. There you see all of the results. Sarah Palin was third, Gingrich fourth. Both well back of the frontrunners though. Congressman Ron Paul joins us this morning now from Clute, Texas. Congressman, great to see you this morning. Thanks so much for being with us.
Ron Paul: Thank you. Thank you, John, nice to be with you.
John Roberts: Over the weekend, we heard a little back and forth in difference of opinion between Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin about whether or not the Republican Party should be the “Party of No.” Newt Gingrich is saying, You can’t be the “Party of No”; you got to be the “Party of Yes”. You got to tell people what you’re for. Sarah Palin Is saying, no, it’s OK if you don’t like something to say “no”. Where do you, Congressman, come down on that?
Ron Paul: Well, I agree with them both. If you don’t like something, you say “no”, but usually there’s an opposite to “no”. You’re saying “yes” to something, so I have to say “no” a lot to most of the legislation in Washington, but I am saying “yes” to the Constitution and to the principles of liberty. So, in a way, they’re both right. I don’t think there’s too much of a disagreement there.
Last week the federal government’s Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission held hearings as part of their continuing investigation into the causes of the acute economic meltdown which occurred in late summer 2008. This bipartisan commission, partly inspired by the Pecora Commission- which investigated the causes of the Great Depression- is expected to report back to Congress before the end of the year.
Things don’t seem to be going well. The individuals questioned by the commission mostly seem to be diverting blame for the whole fiasco to someone else. Nobody is offering any tangible insights into the causes of the financial crisis.
Predictably, the commission will avoid calling any witnesses who might unequivocally indict the federal government for its role in the crisis, or suggest solutions which take away government power. Government commissions have a remarkable tendency to recommend granting even more power to the same useless government agencies that so utterly fail to prevent crises in the first place. We saw this with the Pecora Commission, we saw it after 9-11, and we’re seeing it again today with regard to financial regulations. For example, this latest commission almost certainly will suggest granting more power to the SEC, when in fact the SEC should be abolished as an embarrassing farce. Rest assured that this recommendation will be made without apology or sense of irony.
The reality is that the Federal Reserve relentlessly expanded the money supply through artificially low interest rates for over two decades, and this expansion of easy money caused a wholly predictable bubble. To a myopic Keynesian regulator, the bubble may appear to be caused by greed, but in truth it is completely predictable that humans will act in their own perceived self interest. If the Fed wants to dole out artificially cheap money, people and businesses- including Wall Street businesses- will line up to take it. We can condemn this as greed, but the fundamental problem is Fed policy itself. There will always be demand for cheap money, but we should not allow the Fed to debase our currency and create bubbles of false prosperity to satisfy that demand.
What the commission really needs are experts who understand free market economics rather than big government Keynesian fantasies. The commission has none of these, and has called no true free market witnesses. That perspective would only distract from their predetermined goals.
The commission will bemoan the complexity and inscrutability of our economic problems, but the solution is simple: allow freedom to operate in our markets. Allow U.S. financial, labor, and housing markets to normalize without political interference. Though solution is simple, and rather obvious, it would not be easy or painless, but we’d be so much better off for it in the long run. It would require admitting fiat money is a tangled web of monetary deception prone to catastrophic failure. It would require allowing Americans to choose a system of sound money, where the money supply and interest rates are set by market forces rather than centralized economic planners. Unfortunately, fiat money is like a drug to a Congress hopelessly addicted to spending vastly more than the Treasury collects in revenues. Because of this, our problems can only get worse and more complex before they get better.

Ron Paul: It sounds like a freedom rally! Thank you very much!
Well, it’s great to see so much enthusiasm for the freedom movement and limited government. I want to thank the hosts of this convention for inviting me. I’m delighted to be here and I’m delighted to be among friends. My wife is here with me today and I’m pleased very much with that too.
This last week, there was a report that came out on Friday, just yesterday. It came from the Treasury and it even shocked me, having been concerned about deficits for like about 35 years. But yesterday it was reported by the Treasury that this past week, our national debt went up $106 billion in one day and I would say it’s time to end that kind of spending and get rid of the deficits.
Getting rid of the deficits is easily said. I guess everybody wants to get rid of the deficits. And there is an effort in Washington today on our side of the aisle which is well intended, might do some good, but I think it comes up way too short and that is the dwelling on earmarks.
Now let me tell you about earmarks. Earmarks, if you vote against an earmark, you don’t save a penny. What you do is you take the responsibility away from the Congress and you give the money to the Executive branch and believe me, they’ll waste it even more than the Congress will waste it.
