Anderson Cooper: But first, the views of Congressman Ron Paul and his son, Rand Paul, who’s running for the Republican nomination to replace the retiring Kentucky senator, Jim Bunning. He’s running against the GOP establishment as a staunch conservative and proud Tea Party member. We spoke with him tonight along with his dad, Ron Paul.
Anderson Cooper: Congressman Paul, do you agree with Senator Evan Bayh who basically said yesterday that things are so polarized in Congress that the people’s business isn’t getting done?
Ron Paul: Well, the people’s business isn’t getting done, but I’m not so sure that we’re on the right tune about where the arguments are. I don’t think it’s because people don’t compromise enough, I think it’s because they compromise too much. And we don’t have enough people standing on principle. For instance, they compromise on the welfare state, they compromise on the warfare state, they compromise on endorsing the monetary system. So I think we have way too much compromise and we need to define what we believe in. We either believe in welfarism and socialism and big government, or we believe in liberty and limited government and the Constitution. Jack Hunter: Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who’s now joining us and we’re going to talk about the Tea Parties and more. How are you doing today, Dr. Paul?
Ron Paul: I’m doing fine, thank you.
Jack Hunter: I appreciate you joining us today. One of the main reasons I wanted to speak to you today is you’ve been making the rounds on some of the networks. I saw you on everything from Rachel Maddow’s show, to Andrew Napolitano on Fox News. And there has been a lot of discussion about the Tea Parties. Now, just before we even get into where they might be heading, what’s your general take on what’s happening out there at the grassroots with the Tea Parties right now?
Ron Paul: Well, I think like you said in your introduction, people are very, very angry. I think they’re recognizing that at least the federal government has failed in its efforts to fulfill any of their promises, and they’ve come to this realization. I think a lot of people have been talking about this for decades – you know, we spend too much, there is too much debt and finally they’ve come to this realization. I think it was the financial crisis that we got into a year and a half, 2 years ago that has brought it to attention. And since then people have been very upset.
And I think it is this combination of this realization that the government really is bankrupt and can’t fulfill their promises, then they come up with this scheme and say, “Well, there are 30 million people that don’t have healthcare. So we’re going to give it to them, and it won’t cost anything and it will actually lower the deficit”. That was so outlandish, I think the people just threw up their hands and that led to even some significant changes up at Massachusetts.
The big problem is that the people who are unhappy are pretty unified on where the trouble is, but they’re not unified on exactly how we got here, what we should do about it, what our priorities are. Some people say, “Yes, we should have a balanced budget, all we need are higher taxes”. Other people say, “No, all we have to do is cut welfare spending for children’s food care. That will solve the problem.” Then others want to talk about foreign policy and those are the kind of things I like to talk about. I like to talk about the whole thing: the tax system, the spending at home and the spending abroad. Continue reading “Southern Avenger: Don’t Let Neocons Hijack The Tea Party Movement!”
Judge Napolitano: Hello and welcome to Freedom Watch, your daily dose of raw liberty streaming online at FoxNews.com/FreedomWatch. I’m Judge Andrew Napolitano here defending freedom, defending your natural rights, and defending your right to have a government that stays within the confines of the Constitution.
Is the Tea Party Movement being taken over by neoconservatives? If you recall, the movement originally began as a grassroots revolution in support of Congressman Ron Paul and his ideas about constitutional government, not too long ago in 2007. Since then, and more recently, the Tea Party Movement has taken on a life of its own. It is still a populous uprising against the establishment. But now certain political parties are attempting to control it, to benefit themselves and their candidates, and to use it as a tool against their opponents.
Congressman Paul is not happy by some in the Tea Party Movement and some Tea Party Republicans he’s facing in his own upcoming election. He’s also unhappy with the latest from the Federal Reserve; who wouldn’t be? You ready for this? Should the central bank be bailing out Greece? Isn’t that a matter for Congress to decide? Doesn’t that affect foreign policy?
Joining me now on the phone is one of the great defenders of freedom and constitutional government in Congress today, Congressman Ron Paul from Texas. Congressman Paul, it’s a pleasure, welcome back to Freedom Watch.
Ron Paul: Thank you, Judge. Good to be with you.
Judge Napolitano: Let’s start with the Tea Party Movement. You and I have spoken to them. I have spoken to them many times in your home state. The feeling and reception that I have gotten is one that is very consistent with what you and I believe the Constitution was intended to mean when written, and still should mean today. Is something going on with these folks that we should know about?
Ron Paul: Well, I think it’s not too strange. It’s a powerful movement, there are a lot of people involved and most of them are really disgusted with Washington. And I think they have a healthy disgust for what’s happening and they basically agree that we need less government and more freedom.
But when a political party senses that there is a movement outside the party, you know, they want to get control of it or in front of it or capture it. And if they would come to the meetings and try to join and accept the complaints that the people that have joined the Tea Party Movement, that is one thing. But if they come with the idea, “Oh well, we want you to bend a little bit and become, say, more Republican. You have to be more conventional; you shouldn’t be so hardcore, you shouldn’t be against these wars and you should be in favor or torture and even assassination in order to be part of it.”
I see that is an infiltration of ideas. But I still think the people involved are basically there for the right reason, and I think they’re sorting out what they believe in, and I hope you and I can continue to help influence them into thinking what is right and just and why freedom works rather than saying that we have to slip back in the old ways and accept the old-fashioned ideas that have been failing this country for so long. Brian Sullivan: Congressman Ron Paul says that it’s time to rain on the parade of government interventions. The Texas Republican and former presidential candidate is joining us now by phone.
Congressman Paul, thank you very much for joining us. Brian Sullivan in for Neil. What do you make of the news that European officials are mulling bailing out Greece?
Ron Paul: Well, I think it gives everybody a reprieve maybe for a day. You know, the dollar goes down, the stocks go up, the euro improves. I think it’s temporary. It is such an overwhelming problem. But we ought to learn a lesson about what’s going on. And when you look at Greece, it’s a country that’s 1/3 the size of California, they have 600,000 public employees who are on strike and then they wonder why they have problems.
But even though they’re in bad trouble and they make us look good in comparison, we’re facing the same type of problem. California is in desperate shape. Our country isn’t far behind. But the other European countries are so bad, that it sort of gives us a false sense of security that we can bail out everybody.
But it will end. It’s going to all end, I think, in a tragedy for the whole world because we’ve all lived beyond our means and we’re all trying to bail out everybody. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Fed is very much involved behind the scenes, even with what’s going on over there with Greece right now because they’re allowed to. That’s the reason they don’t want any transparency because they can be involved in all these kinds of bailouts. Continue reading “Federal Reserve Behind Greece Bailout?”
Ron Paul discusses the Tea Party and politics with Rachel Maddow.

Sarah Palin: The Republican Party would be really smart to start their train to absorb as much of the Tea Party Movement as possible, because this is the future of our country. The Tea Party Movement is the future of politics.
Michael Steele: The Tea Party Movement is the revelatory moment for us. It really puts in stark relief where the American people are, how they feel, and what they feel. And I think it’s important for our party to appreciate and understand so that we can move towards it, embrace and look into the future.
Rachel Maddow: That’s the chairman of the Republican National Committee, and before him, the Fox News commentator they now say is the de facto leader of the Tea Party Movement, arguing that the Republican Party’s path back to power is that movement. That’s the rhetoric.
But today rhetoric became reality in the state of South Carolina where the state Republican Party and a coalition of sate Tea Party groups agreed to work together moving forward. The merging has started. And the effort by the Republican Party to adopt and absorb what sells itself as a grassroots conservative movement this time around, is way different from what went on the last time. There was an energizing grassroots movement from the right. Then it was the Ron Paul Revolution. Ron Paul supporters held rallies, sprayed painted street graffiti, raised astounding sums of money with one-day online money bombs, all without the help of a party machine, big money beltway lobbyists or even much prodding from Dr. Paul himself.
Despite that honest to goodness grassroots enthusiasm, look how Ron Paul was treated by the Republican establishment. He was excluded from a presidential candidates forum that was sponsored by Fox News. Dr. Paul elected to hold his own competing event at the same time. Ron Paul was refused a speaking slot at the 2008 Republican national convention. So, he held his own convention across town which drew more than 10,000 supporters.
In contrast, Fox News today endlessly promotes the Tea Partiers, going so far as to have their network personalities host Tea Party events. Leading elected Republicans today, of course, are falling all over themselves to speak at Tea Party events. Tea Partiers claim the small-government low-taxes mantel of libertarianism that has been the hallmark of the Ron Paul Revolution. But the Tea Partiers – at least some of them – seem to be opposed to him, too. As we reported last night, Dr. Paul is facing three challengers in his congressional district in Texas, all of whom are in some way aligned with the Tea Party Movement.
Joining us now is Republican Congressman Dr. Ron Paul. Dr. Paul, it’s truly nice to have you back on the show. Thank you for your time.
