It’s called doublethink, taking two contradictory ideas and believing in them simultaneously.

Michael, the question is not who should sit idle or not, it’s what is the United States’ responsibility in such a fight. And is there a moral imperative–and if so, whose side does one take? As Ron Paul says, the challenges in the Middle East have been ongoing in a variety of forms for hundreds of years (if not thousands). The complexities–religious, political, economic, tribal, cultural–run deep. Your analogy to the hypothetical prospect of a similar outbreak of violence in the Houston region is relevant to the extent that even such a conflict in Houston would be more significant to global interests than even Gaza–not only economically, but in terms of the size of the land mass and populations involved. Sadly, governments, especially like that of the United States, must choose its economic AND moral involvements carefully. Compassion is important, but prioritizing that compassion becomes, unfortunately, important as well. Tragedies, disease, death, poverty, and “civil” conflicts impact thousands of human beings daily–not just occasionally. Ron Paul typically suggesets that we think carefully and strategically as well as compassionately about our involvement in world crises. But, the US cannot afford to be the world’s government–no matter how good the intention.

While I side with you on most of your stances, I must take issue with you on this topic. Let us consider this circumstance in terms that make sense for us. What would happen if the people who lived in Galveston had a distinct taste for those who lived on the mainland (such as Houston, or Clear Lake). Now lets pretend that these same people spent a majority of time plotting against the people in Houston. They even go as far as lobbing rockets into the outer lying neighborhoods in Pearland, Clear Lake, or Texas City. What would be an appropriate response to that? I think you would agree that it is unacceptable for us to assume that we should just sit idle.
